Of all the seasons, autumn is the most nostalgic. If spring brings new life and warmth, autumn brings the end of summer's growth cycle, of hot days, school holidays and vacation freedoms. And it brings hints of winter cold. The fields turn brown, gold or tan. Leaves of trees die-in yellow, red, orange, etc. Hunting begins in most areas, football causes many a heart to beat fast, food tastes bet ter. One has more energy. The skies are clearer and a walk outside among the falling leaves and northern winds never fail to bring back memories of years* goneby. September and October in more northerly states and October and November in more southerly latitudes bring beautiful days for those who love fall. These are also the months to prepare for winter, for Christmas, for the end of the year of the calen dar tax year. When autumn ends, there are only four days until 1983! COUNTY FAIRS... September and October are county fair mon ths. Id Minnesota and Maine, are more northerly states, county fairs are often in August. The fairs move south with changing weather? and the carny shows that compliment most fairs Florida or ITS" People and Issues the far south by winter. The northward movement begins in spring, from the south up. Fairs usually run a week, but one in Dallas lasts 24 days. One in Ohio, we read, boast millions of visitors. Some of the oldest are in the South and in New England. The truly, traditional county fair, like the state fair at Minneapolis St. Paul is still farm oriented. POLITICS CHANGED ... Politics in North Carolina has changed considerable in the last 50 years. The change began in 1928, when Herbert Hoover carried North Carolina and the nation in that year. A1 Smith was the Democratic nominee for the President that year and Herbert Hoover was the Republican nominee. Before that year North Carolina was a solid Democratic state. When, four years later, when the presidential election was coming up it was a different situation in 1932._Hoover was running for re election and Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, New York, was running for President. As a young man, I was in terested in the election. While Hoover carried 28 states in 1928, Hoover carried only six states in 1932 and Roosevelt carried 42 states in 1932. Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected four times. Before that, no one had attempted to run for President more than two terms, as President George Washington set the record of two four year terms. Roosevelt was a popular President and he was elected president only p. because of the World War II. 9 Roosevelt died soon after taking office for President, about two or three months after beginning his four year term, he died suddenly at the Warm Springs home in Georgia. In 1947 many people were against electing a President and Vice President for more than two four-terms. I, being a freshman on the General Assembly along with another freshman, Winfield Blackwell introduced a bill in the House of Representatives to limit the President to two four-terms for a President and Vice President. The State Senate, then introduced a similar bill. After some time, both the House and Senate voted to limit the President and Vice President to two four-terms which was soon adopted by the necessary three-fourths of the States.
