Jones and I thought you and fellow members of government of the town of Raeford would be in terested in the enclosed copy of a brochure of Rarford, published, I think in early 1941! Don't know why I kept it for these many yean, but just last month my family had a family reu nion in Pinehurst, N.C. We lived in Sanatorium, N.C. and all at tended Ashemont Grammar School and got our high school diplomas at Hoke County High. Fond memories. My family is spreadout all over the United States and we had a wonderful time. 1 personally visited all of Raeford and taw a number of old buildings and some that are no longer there, but the whole trip was very nostalgic and memorable! I would very much appreciate an early reply from you on any update info you have for comparison of this thing from nearly 44 years ago. I am somewhat of a history nut. Thank you very much. Yours truly, Richard G. Jones I can't recall Richard, but do remember Alton and Robert Jones that came to high school in Raeford. They were behind me in school. Alton finished, I believe in 1936. Mr. Jones worked at the N.C. Sanatorium. I remember see ing him many times. The brochure is something to look at. It has pictures of the old Raeford Methodist and Raeford Baptist Churches when they were wooden. The high school was then where Turlington School is now. I hope the Mayor will send Richard our latest brochure. Peo ple that were born and raised in Hoke, will never forget the place. Richard now lives in Merritt Island, Fla. 32953. His street ad dress is 880 Waikiki Drive. Thanks Mayor, for the letter. Autry , Gentry join Martin campaign team The Jim Martin for Governor campaign has announced the for mation of the Hoke County Democrats for Martin Committee to be headed by Raeford Coun cilman Bob Gentry and former school Superintendent Raz Autry. In expressing his support foe Republican candidate Martin, Co chair Gentry, a Raeford City Councilman, said, "Jim Martin is a vivacious, honest man who talks about things I think will help make North Carolina a better place to live. He, like the Republican party, is more aligned with my thoughts than is the present Democrat par ty." Autry, former superintendent of the Hoke County School System and county chair for Eddie Kjiox's gubernatorial bid, said, "As a Democrat, I chose to support Jim Martin because he is not only in telligent, but he is also compas sionate. He is also very educa tionally minded. Having been an educator for 35 years, the fact that he sees education as his 01 priority appeals very much with me." Autry continued saying, "Jim Martin will be as fine a Governor as North Carolina has ever had." State Democrats for Martin co ordinator Mary Lou Smith praised Gentry and Autry saying, "Bob Gentry and Raz Autry should be commended for having the courage to forget party politics and do what they think is right - Vote for Jim Martin. With support from Democrats like these, Jim Martin can't lose." The ocean contains about 97 *1% of the earth's water. K.: ? v lEa nL ' ? 1 Entrance to the world down under Actually, this is what bad sewer tines can do to thtriandscape. -A "sink: hole" tike this one is what tipped City Manager Tom Phillips into in vestigating the condition of a sewer line that had to be dosed off because of deterioration. According to Phillips, when a line breaks, a space is - created -where the pipe-used to be and water runs out of the break. When the space gets full of water, it has no place to go and runs back into the pipe carrying sand alongif ith it. When this has happened long enough, the ground collapses from underneath and such holes are made. ... City investigating sewer woes (Continued from page 1A) By measuring what flows through one manhole, and then going a short distance down th? line and measuring again, the team can find sections of the system that are taking on more water than ex pected, said the manager. The city now has constant measurements of how much sewage should be contained in a length of pipe depending on how many houses or businesses is hook ed into the section, he said. Before any such inspections can begin, the city sewer system must be broken down into subsystems, said Phillips. The subsystems will then be tested and findings will be noted for a total system evaluation, he said. Those subsystems that show in itial problems will have indepth studies run on them first. The two man team will also do some maintenence work on the system. Small problems that can be cor rected by the team will be dealt with on the spot and the team will make notes on problems large enough to legitimize a construction team from the city, said Phillips. Another problem being address ed by the manager is the possibility of faulty records of water sales. If the records of water sales are wrong, the sewer plant may not be treating as much extra water as previously estimated, Phillips said. The city will be evaluating its meters in the near future to see if they are all functioning properly.
