William Fitch. Mrs. A.K. Leach provided organ music and Mrs. Leland Strother, soloist, sang, "O Perfect Love." It was a typical wedding with all the usual southern traditions, ex cept, these two people have never been to Raeford before Friday. As Mrs. Ed (Evelyn) Manning wandered through the Edin borough Restaurant Friday at noon with Mrs. Harris Blake by her side was politiking and meeting the folks of. Raeford and Hoke County- whenshe found Mr. Hqke , and Miss Hunley. " witrth?ifr tsnr while, Mrs. Manning's mind and heart started working double time. Emory Hoke and Nancy Hunley, who have only known each other for two weeks. Emory is front Covington,- Virginia and Nanc? Irons Columbus, OM*. ?Nf~ they knew they were destined for marriage. Not being able to "work out details" of the marriage because they live eight hours apart, they decided to elope to Hoke County. Hoke doesn't know if there is any connection between his family and Hoke County. He had never heard about our area until approx imately two years ago. While traveling on the Blue Ridge Parkway, he stopped for a rest and started talking with "some lady." When asked if he was associated with the Hokes that formed Hoke County, he was astonished. This was Hoke's first hearing of Hoke County. After the couple started making eloping plans they decided "Why not go to Hoke County?" Arriving in Raeford, and not knowing anyone, they were for tunate enough to have met Mrs. Manning. She wanted to help. After several attempts to find a minister to perform a ceremony failed, Mrs. Manning and her secretary, Mrs. Vicki Beard, thought to contact Bethel ^J*jesjbyterian Church, minister ? Rev. Fitch. / ' ?= -Rev . Fitch was willing tohdp and the wedding took place at 4:30 p.m. ' Before long, a soloist and organist were found and everything was set. "This is real Southern hospitali ty" Emory said in disbelief after what happened in Hoke County on their special Friday afternoon. With folks like Evelyn Manning around that is what makes Raeford and Hoke County such a beautiful place. Balfour extended the official welcome to its visitors, as the Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Church observed its 25th annual Homecoming service. The response was by J.D. Malloy, who is a ruling Elder of the Parkton Presbyterian Church and, a former Deacon of the Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Church. The sermon was delivered by Neill A. Baker. Topic of sermon, "The Price." Mr. Baker is a Rul ing Elder of the Sherwood Presbyterian Church, he has filled forty-seven different pulpits in Fayetteville Presbytery. Mr. Baker delivered the sermon at Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Homecoming in 1962. The Reverend Dr. R.K. Gustaf son, pastor of the church, was unable to attend due to recuperating from a heart attack. Following the service dinner was served in the Fellowship Hall and enjoyed by all. The Baptist Church observed their Homecoming Sunday, Oct. 28. The pastor, Reverend Henry L. Foster welcomed the guests and the speaker, the Reverend Edwin Bullock. Bullock is coordinator of volunteer work of the Foreign Mis sion Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, located in Richmond, Va. After the service all were in vited to enjoy a picnic dinner at the Educational Building. ? ? * Church Revival will be held through Wednesday evening, Oc tober 31. Rev. Bullock is the speaker. ? * ? The Ladies Auxiliary of the Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring an auction on Friday night, November 2 at 7 o'clock at the Fire Station. The public is in vited. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Angus Shaw of Cincinnati, Ohio spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. J. Edwin Clif ton, Jr. Spending several weeks with Mr. and Mrs. John W. Brown is their daughter, Mrs. Bill Brown and son, Nathan from Ft. Smith, Ark. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Spears at tended the funeral of his cousin, Mrs. Sara J. Spears at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church in Fayet teville last Sunday. Mrs. Bill Norfinger and daughters, . Elizabeth and Catherine of Richmond spent last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. McGougan. Class of 1954 has reunion Hoke High School's Class of 1954 held Its 30th year reunion on September 1, in Southern Pines at the Sheraton Convention Center. Mr. and Mrs. George Please of Cary spent last weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Wat son. Mr. and Mrs. Tim Nance of Siler City visited her brother and family, Fred Chason and attended service at the Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. George Caddell and Misses Lib and Lois Sumner spent Monday in Durham. George underwent eye surgery first of Oc tober at Vet. Hospital in Durham and was not getting along well. Friends were glad to have Mr. and Mrs. John Gardner of Lumberton for the Homecoming Day. Personals Mrs. Mary Lamont, Mrs. Lorena Lester, Mrs. Johnnie Belle McPhaul, Mrs. Agnes Mae Camp bell, and Mrs. Nell Carter spent the weekend at Holdens Beach. Mrs. Marguerite Thomas spent last week in Chapel Hill with her sister, Mrs. Jean Carver. Mrs. Pauline McFadyen and Mrs. Hallie Wishart were also there for a visit. Mrs. Virginia Daniels spent the weekend in Rockingham where she attended the 50th anniversary of - the Ladies Aide Society. She is a rvvferaw member.
