The gathering Eighth district Congressman Bill Hefner (left) chats with supporters at the local Democratic Party last Thursday night at the new National Guard Armory. The rally was said to have attracted over 500 per sons from Raeford and Hoke County. The rally was held as a final push by Democrats to get out and vote. Chicken bog was served and Hefner entertain ed the crowd by singing. The singing must have worked. Hefner carried Hoke County and the elec tion on Tuesday. . . . Around T own continued (Continued from page 1A) will be off television. I am a strong believer in advertising, but the ads on TV this year have just about turned people away from the polls. Let's hope that everyone did their duty and went to the polls Tuesday. It is hard to say "may the best man win.!" ? ? * ? - The +ioke High Bucks added~_ another victory to their r?cordlajt week. It has beeh a long time smHiP" the Bucks had a winning season. They have a winning record in the conference too. It is so much easier for the coaching staff to deal with players who are winners. This should mean that the Bucks will continue to have good records. * * * Someone was telling me recently that a former member of the Na tional Guard in Raeford went by the armory and asked about some records he needed. He was asking of records before World War II and he was told that the National Guard started in Raeford in 1947. Now this is not completely true. The local unit now in existence was formed after World War II in 1947. The whole truth would be that after World War I the National Guard came to Raeford and two units left September 16, 1940 and stayed until the end of World War II. "^Maybea^aque or -sign should - ^xfeerflil^c^aL^rii^Larniory with these dates on it. With new people coming to Raeford all the time many facts can be forgotten and we don't believe this should happen. Not only about the Guard, but many other events. ? ? # The 7th Annual Reunion of Btry "F", 252nd CA, which was in ducted into federal service September 16, 1940, was held last week at Litchfield Beach, S.C. There were 64 men and their ladies for the banquet Saturday night. We that were in the unit and live in Raeford and Hoke County see each other many times during the year, but it is so good to see old friends from other parts of the state and nation. It seems that for the past seven years someone would always turn up who hadn't attended a reunion in the past. This means seeing someone you haven't seen in about 40 years. This makes you want to go again next year. ? Luke and Phyllis McNeill took ' their TV equipment to-the reunion and took pictures and also shqSi'SP3 old Army pictures and old pictures of Raeford people. Some in the old Raeford people pictures were at the reunion and their wives had a ball seeing their younger mate. Everyone seemed to have a fine time and as you know, 1 love re unions. On our return from Litchfield Sunday, Graham Clark received a call from a relative of Hayes Powell and he informed Graham that Hayes had died at 2 a.m. Sun day morning. This is to inform all old Btry "F" members of the death. Local garbage firm is sold By Ed Miller After eight years of serving residents of Raeford and Hoke County, Clyde A. Leach is selling his firm Pick-Up Sanitation Ser vices to American Refuse Systems, Inc. "American Refuse has been in competition with me for the last five or six years," Leach said. Leach, who has been in the sanitation business for 18 years, was present at a special meeting of the Hoke County Commission last Wednesday asking that board's ap proval to sell his contract with the county to American Refuse. Leach's company has been under contract to empty and main tain the metal trash containers around the county. Maintenance around the containers was also a part of the contract. Leach's request was granted. "Essentially, there will be no change in the system, just in the ownership," said Commission Chairman John Balfour. The new sanitation service will not be putting anyone presently working for Leach out of work, the ownership of the truck fleet will just change, Leach said. American Refuse, a company based in Roanoke Rapids, has been in the sanitation business for a number of years, Leach said. "From my experience, they do a great job," Leach said. American now has the county pick up contract for Moore Coun ty. Both Moore County and Southern Pines gave American high recommendations, said Coun ty Attorney Duncan McFadyen. The new firm was required to sign an indemnity bond in the amount of S72.332. . . . Tell Everyone Away From Home About All The Goings-on Back In Hoke County The News-Journal el . Alleged accomplice charged By Ed Miller An accomplice who allegedly fled from the scene of a break-in two weeks ago to avoid capture by police, was apprehended last week. Jack Lenier Goodwin, 21, who allegedly was the accomplice of Robin Wayne McVicker, arrested two weeks ago on breaking and entering charges at the Hoke Con crete Works, was arrested last week and jailed pending similar charges. Goodwin was taken into custody on October 30 and, as of Monday, was waiting in jail for his $10,000 bond to be posted on Tuesday, Raeford Police Chief Leonard Wiggins said. Goodwin has also been charged with felonious breaking and enter ing, Wiggins said. Goodwin and McVicker were both out of jail on bond just before being arrested and charged with the latest breaking and enter ing charges, Wiggins said. Two weeks ago. Police Patrolman J.R. McNeill was on patrol when he found a break-in at the Hoke Concrete Works. According to previous reports, two suspects ran from the building as McNeill inspected the premises. McNeill captured McVicker on the scene, reports say, but, the other suspect got away. Goodwin was that other suspect, Wiggins said. The 'wo men were allegedly tied in with two other thefts. During September, the Little Whale.. Restaurant and the Universal" Sporting Center were both robbed. From Universal Sporting Center, S8.888.20 in guns, knives and ammunition was taken and about $1,317 in food stuffs was found missing from The Little Whale. In those apparent robberies, Goodwin and McVicker along with John "Yogi" Gordon were ar-<| rested and charged, reports say. Gordon was sent to prison two weeks ago after being convicted of breaking and entering and other charges in Hoke County Superior Court, records say. DRIVE A LITTLE SAVE A LOT ? MOBILE HOMES ?
