Rev. Tuttle celebrates 1 00

The Rev. Mills Monroe Tuttle
was 100 years old Friday,
November 2.
On Friday morning he was
dressed up and all ready for a
festive day. The celebrating had
already begun as his children and
grandchildren gathered. He lives in
Hoke County with his daughter,
Mrs. Emma Lee McLean. Her
brothers. Mills Monroe Jr. and
Robert Erskine had come with
their wives and the grandchildren
had begun to arrive.
The Rev. Tuttle was eager to re
count his busy life.
His memory is good and he and
his famliy had a Fine time reminisc
ing.
Tuttle was born, as he says,
"right on the line" between North
and South Carolina, in his grand
mother's house. His parents were
running a hotel in Lenoir when his
mother decided to go home to her
mother's for his birth. His grand
mother lived between Fort Mill
and Pineville.
His parents had six other
children, four sons and two
daughters. Rev. Tuttle says when
they began having more children,
they gave up the hotel business,
and his father began running a
store. His mother lived to the age
of 92.
The Charlotte-Monroe area was
his home for "35 or 40 years" he
said. He was a bookkeeper or ac
countant until he was 52 years old.
As a young man he worked as an
assistant Register of Deeds. Later
he worked for an oil company and
textile company - one job for 20
years.
At the age of 52, he experienced
a call from the Lord and became
an evanglist. He had been a life
long Methodist, but found the
Baptist church was better suited
for the evangelical work that he
began.
At first, he says, he continued to
work as an accountant and travel
ed around to preach near home at
night.
Before long he began to preach
as a profession, and he continued
to preach for 28 years.
The Rev. Tuttle's family had
come from great distaces to be
with him on his birthday.
Mrs. McLean's son Monroe
lives nearby, but her son Harry
was coming from Clarksville,
Virginia and her son Neil from
Marietta, Georgia. Her daughter
Anne lives in Arizona and could
not come.
His son Mills Monroe Tuttle Jr.
and his wife Margaret live parts of
each year in Canada. They had
driven from Canada to Florida and
back to Hoke County for this
special occasion. Their son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Mills Monroe Tuttk, III had came
from Birmingham Alabama.
Robert Erskin's wife Rachel
talked about a family crest she has
for the Tuttle family. She says the
name derived from Tut Hill, and
the crest shows a hill and a dove.
She says theirs is a peaceful family.
She and Erskin came from Wilm
ington, Delaware. Their son
Robert Erskin Jr. came from
Newark, Delaware. Their other
son Michael lives in Providence,
Rhode Island. He could not come.
Rev. Tuttle shares his November
birthdate with two presidents,
McKinley and Polk. He got
greetings this year from another.
President and Mrs. Reagan had
sent a lovely engraved card from
the White House.
When asked if he was interested
in political leaders and if he had
any special memories of a presi
dent, Rev. Tuttle began to tell a
story about Roosevelt coming to
Charlotte to be in a parade. That
was May 20, a founders' day, he
thought.
His daughter remembered
Roosevelt coming too, but as Mr.
Tuttle talked on we learned that his
wife had been a young woman in
the parade.
The day he remembered so fond
ly was before his daughter's birth.
The President Roosevelt he
remembered was Theodore.
Then and now
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Julian King will be on the
Raeford Junior Woman's Club Christmas Home
Tour. The house, located on Central Avenue, is
shown here as it appeared around 1900 (above) and
as it did on Monday.

December 2 is the date set for
the Christmas Tour of Homes and
Craft Show planned by the
Raeford Junior Woman's Club.
One of the homes on the tour is
owned by Julian and Mary Neil
King. Mrs. King's grandfather
presented the house to his bride as
a wedding gift, and it has been us
ed continually by the Gatlin fami
ly. It was built in 1906 by Marcus
Dew, a Raeford contractor who
built many Raeford homes in the
town's early days.
The house has changed little
structurely since Mr. and Mrs.

Hallie Gatlin lived there. The
Kings bought the house in 1973
and have worked to modernize the
heating system and have added
central air conditioning. They still
use the footed bathtub and three of
the fireplaces. Many furnishings
have Gatlin history.
There are remnants of a maid's
quarters, a wash house, and a
smoke house still on the property.
It is at 213 East Central Avenue.
The Craft Show at the Civic
Center will feature demonstrations
and the sales of crafts - wonderful
Christmas gifts.
Melody Schech was a founding
member of Fayetteville's Fiber
Arts Guild. She dyes her yarn us
ing natural materials and spins at
her spinning wheel.
Bill Riser of Fayetteville builds
sleds and other wooden items. He
works full-time with Cumberland
County Dept. of Social Services,
but his wood working is more than
just a hobby.
The Calico Corner of Raeford
will have a display of Christmas
ideas in the show.

united in marriage on Thursday,
November 1 at the Raeford
Church of God. I
Rev. Barney Childers officiated .
Children of the couple attended.
Out-of-town guests were sisters

The couple will reside in
Raeford.
