To county officials, the letter from Lindsay could mean the dif ference between getting the widen ing project on the priority list or not;;--. "" "I'm tickled to death that he's (written the letter)," Hoke County Commissioner - Wyatt Upchurch :said. _ ?' }?? * . "That is what it's going to take/' he said. . ' County Commission Chiunnan John Balfour. and former Chamber ?of Commence -President Steve Parker also believe the' letter will help the effort to get the highway . widened. . 'Tm sure the letter will help," . said Balfour. "I think it's going to add to our - credibility," Parker said. "Highway 401 is a dangerous highway, and it is not eveA recognized by the state,". Parker said. Parker is recommending that the original committee that went to Raleigh to seek help with 401 re gather to follow-up on the project. That committee consisted of Balfour, Upchurch, County Com mission Vice-Chairman James Albert Hunt, State Representative Danny DeVane and Parker. The committee needs to ask the help of Congressman Bill Hefner, Parker said. "Hefner needs to do something for Hoke County," said Parker. "We need a favor." In the recent election, Hefner barely won his bid for thte Congres sional seat by 4,000 votes. His margin was about 2,000 votes in Hoke County. "The first thing that needs to be done is to get 401 back on the priority list," according to Parker. "We need to go to Hefner and influence him to get it back on the list,'" he: said. When the 401 Committee went to Raleigh to meet with' state of-' ficiats- on the-- matter, DOT -Secretary Roberson said an' en dorsement by Ft. Bragg officials would "most definitely*' help in getting the road back oh the priori ty list, according to Packer. The State DOT Board met last Friday, but 401 was not mentioned in the meeting, Highway Ad ministrator Billy Rose said! "There was no reason for it to be brought up at that meeting," Rose said. ? "It (401) has been under active consideration for the past few months, and it will be brought up at the December meeting when the priority list is updated," Rose said. . . .Around Town (Continued from page 1A) She lives in Oklahoma and has had to make several trips to North Carolina. After reading the letter last Saturday night my thoughts went back many years to a time when this lady and her older sister were in my Sunday School class here, I taught the Senior Highs at that time. We would like to share this letter with our readers: ? The letter follows: Dear Mr7 Morris, *'? '' I wanted to tell the friends in Raeford how 1 feel, so I thought it best to write it down in a letter to you. The Citizens of Raeford ought to be proud of Jhcauclvcs! I have lived many places in the pair 20 , years, but Raeford tops them all in several categories. Most military communities, as I have lived in, have a special closeness or bond simply because of "the one-in-the same goal." But here in Raeford, you people have that "extra" special closeness even with varied interests in town. Living with my father for three weeks, I've been exposed to the ge nuine, loving concern expressed for Daddy shown through personal visits, invitations to meals, phone calls, gifts and cards. Most of this world moves in a steady pace of self concern. But the people of Raeford have given of themselves in unselfishness, i believe this is due largely to each person showing and putting into practice your love of the Lord and His teachings. You have a strong church based community, and you I do so appreciate the kindness shown me while 1 have been in Raeford, and want to thank you for the genuine love shown our family this year, especially since May. jLv,can never exprest enough ; ? gratitude and admiratiorr to att the friends in Raeford. Most Sincerely, Ann Gatlin Beach Thanks Ann, for the kind words about the people of Raeford, there is no place like it! Next week a couple of items of old times.
