Box 550 Raeford, N.C. 28376 Name _ Address Poodle throws up weekly DEAR DOCTOR: About once each week, our seven month old female poodle throws up about a tablespoon of yellow bile. I sometimes hear a gurgle between the neck and the front legs when / pick her up. What is causing this? What can I do about it? ANSWER: It is not uncommon for dogs to occassionally throw up a small amount of white mucus or a little bile colored fluid, but to have this kind of problem on a regular basis makes me think there may be a problem that needs in vestigation. There are several possible causes for this kind of behavior and your veterinarian may need to run a test or two to find what is causing the vomiting. High on the list of possibilities to be considered would be in testinal parasites (worms), a foreign object lodged in the stomach, or development defect in the esophagus or stomach. It would be impossible without seeing the pet to give you an idea of what the actual cause might be. DEAR DOCTOR: My three month old puppy scratches all the time. He is even losing hair on his face and ears. Could this be poison ivy? He is always running in the field in back of the house where there is plenty of poison ivy grow ing. ANSWER: Fortunately our pets are not affected by poison ivy. However, they will pick up the ir ritating oil from the poison ivy plants on their hair and can transmit it to our skin when we pet and play with them. It sounds as if your puppy has a serious skin disease and needs to have professional diagnosis and treatment. I would expect your You And Your Pet veterinarian to thoroughly ex amine the skin and perhaps do a skin scraping. One possible cause of severe scratching and hair loss in a young dog is Sarcoptic mange. This type of mange is caused by a mite that lives and reproduces in the upper layers of the skin. The body reacts to the presence of the mite and inflammation of the skin results. Treatment of this type of skin disorder requires accurate diagnosis and use of a special in secticide. Don't delay having this problem checked. DEAR DOCTOR: My cat has been vomiting little clumps of hair recently. Are these the hairballs I've heard about? What do I need to do? ANSWER: Yes, 1 suspect that the hair the cat is vomiting represents a much larger mass of hair collected in the stomach. The mass accumulates because the cat grooms itself by licking the haircoat with its rough tongue. The tongue acts as a comb as some of the hair is pulled from the. coat and then is swallowed. If the hair doesn't move out of the stomach and on through the in testines, it acts as a foreign object in the stomach and stimulates vomiting. Your veterinarian will have a medication that can be given to the cat on a routine basis to act as a lubricant and help the hair move on out of the stomach. Most of these products are flavored to make the product easier to get into the cat.
