Governor Jim Hunt and Presi dent Ronald Reagan have pro claimed November 25 to December 1 as Home Care Week to pay tribute to the thousands of dedicated individuals throughout the country whose efforts allow more than five million elderly, in firm, disabled or dying to receive skilled health and social services in the comfort and privacy of their homes. Judy Ferguson, R.N. Super visor, of St. Joseph Hospital Home Health Agency, Raeford of fice noted, "There is a movement in this country to find less expen sive and more humane ways to provide hejrtth care to our growing elderly population, as well as to children and young people who are temporarily or chronically ill or disabled. "Lawmakers are finally discovering what we have known all along: Home care supports the dignity and independence of our most vulnerable by keeping them out of hospitals and nursing homes for as long as possible. It keeps families together and offers a com passionate and low cost way to care for our loved ones." In an era of skyrocketing health care costs, home care offers an alternative to institutional care both because it is less expensive and because it encourages self reliance and independence. Services provided by the Agency range from daily skilled nursing care, physical or occupational therapy to nutrition and IV therapy, to pain management and -oionmedical services to keep thepa tients' environment safe and healthy. St. Joseph Hospital Home Health Agency is providing health care to over 80 homebound pa tients in Hoke County. The staff has increased recently in order to continue to provide quality care for an expanding number of patients. The Hoke County Home Health staff includes: Judy Ferguson, R.N. supervisor - seven years in H.H.; Ronda Pickler, R.N. - six years in H.H.; Vicki Jones, R.N. -four months in H.H.; Helen Fields, H.H.A. - five years in H.H.; Jackie Primeaw, H.H.A. -two years in H.H.; Susan Ellis, H.H.A. - four months in H.H.; Don McCluskey, L.P.T. - three years in H.H.; Bob Logan, Speech Therapy - two years in H.H.; Pam Foster, nutritionist - six months in H.H.; Arlene French, O.T. - six months in H.H. and Cathy Owens, Sec. - six months. Home Health patients in Hoke County must be homebound, have a need for a skilled nurse and be under the care of a physician. If a loved one, friend, neighbor, parishner or recent hospital dis charged patient fits the criteria, contact Home Health at 875-8198 and let them see if they can help. The theme for Home Care Week is "When it comes to Health Care, there is no place like home. Only the thighs of turkey are used to make turkey ham. Turkey leftovers can be used in sandwiches, salads, barbecue, tacos, meat pies, turnovers, meatloaf, corn pudding, gumbo and even as a pizza topping as well as in casseroles and creamed dishes.
