Crowder honored at bridal shower Miss Lisa Crowder was honored on November 8 with a miscellaneous bridal shower in the fellowship hall of the Raeford United Methodist Church. Hostesses were Miss Helen Barr ington, Mrs. Bill Brown, and Mrs. Clarence Brown. The refreshment table was covered with an antique lace tablecloth. An arrangement of pink painted daisies and snap dragons was in the center of the table. Miss Crowder was given a corsage of miniature feathered car nations. While the honoree opened gifts from the guests, bridal cakes, cheese biscuits, apricot fingers, seafoam candy, and nuts were served. Mrs. Bill Brown poured punch. The mother of the groom-elect, Mrs. Grady Robinson of Candor, was a special out of town guest. The hostess' gift for Miss Crowder was a crystal pitcher. Honored of Mack Koonce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Koonce of Raeford, has been selected Outstanding Student in the School of Dentistry and Oral Surgery. Columbia University, New York, N. Y. This award will be presented at the annual dinner of :\ew York Area Col leges of Dentistry. Hope will graduate in the spring and will continue her studies at Colum bia University School of Den tistry with a specialty in Periodontia. McLeod home This oil portrait by Beth Turner Bowers of Beth McLeod at age four hangs in the Main Street home of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie McLeod. The residence will be on the Raeford Junior Woman's Club Christmas Tour December 2. Home with heritage on Christmas tour The Main Street home of Mr. ' and Mrs. Bennie McLeod will be open for the Raeford Junior Woman's Club Christmas Tour. The tour is planned for December 2 from 2 to 6 and originates at the Civic Center. Mrs. Kathryn Thomas McLeod, Bennie'$ mother, remembers when her father was having the house ifrH'IV ... Sen. J. Benton Thomas built' the " first brick house in Raeford. The bricklayers came from Elizabethtown and the construc tion took three years to complete. The Thomas family moved in 1920. The home has been used con tinually by Sen. Thomas' family. The McLeod family is third and fourth generation. The home has been lovingly maintained. Many furnishings are those of the late Benton and Kate Thomas. There are also portraits of the McLeod daughters done in oil by Beth Turner Bowers which tourgoers will enjoy seeing. At the Civic Center, craftsmen and women will be demonstrating and selling their work. Rosmarie Zanders, a basket maker will be there. She is a professional who also teaches classes in basketry through Fayetteville Technical In stitute and the Fayetteville Museum of Art. She has created in any "of heYown^es^fafi^irtcif^ pride in her carefully crafted baskets. . . Jack Pinkerton participated in the Craft Show last year. He and his work were so well received that he is looking forward to this year's show. He works with stained glass, making Christmas ornaments, sun catchers, and great Christmas gifts. He is experienced at giving demonstrations and will add to the excitement of this festive after noon. Crawford, of Raeford, were honor guests at a dinner party on Saturday night, November 3, at McCarthy's Restaurant in Lumberton. Hosts were Dr. and Mrs. Robert Britt, Mr. and Mrs. William McKay, Mr. and Mrs. William McCormick and Dr. and Mrs. Lewis McNeill. Arrangements of bridal flowers were used in the private dining room. The bride-elect, her mother, Mrs. Thomas White, and the mother of the groom-to-be, Mrs. George Crawford of Raeford, were pinned with corsages of white daisies. Miss White and her fiance were later presented a serving bowl in their china pattern by the hosts. A three course dinner was served the honorees, their parents, and the following guests from out-of town: Miss Barbara Bair from Wilmington, Eddie Beverly of Charlotte, Joel Bounds of Raeford, Miss Jane Hall from Lumberton and Milton White of Fayetteville. * * * On Saturday, November 10, Miss White was honored with a luncheon at John's Restaurant in Lumberton by Mesdames O.K. Hogan, Lawrence Rea, Charles E. Wright and Miss Elizabeth McGeachy. Miss White was presented a corsage of white roses. Her mother, Mrs. Thomas White, and the mother of her fiance, Mrs. George Crawford, were given white daisy corsages. A colorful arrangement of carnations, daisies and mums centered the luncheon table. Hostess gift to the bride elect was a pair of silver candle sticks. Attending from out of town were Mrs. Crawford of Raeford, Mrs. Joe McArthur from Fayet teville, Mrs. Kathryn Ward of Winston Salem, and Mrs. Charles Hill of Lumberton. Woman's Club Education Public Affairs Garden The Arts The Woman's Club of Raeford met on November 13 at the Hoke Public Library. This meeting was the first open meeting of the year. All four departments were well represented. The Arts Department announced that six new members have joined. The Arts Department also had the highest attendance at the meeting. The hostesses were the members of the Education Department. The program was a demonstration by Mrs. Kathleen Jones, a member of the Garden Department. She showed materials and techniques for making Christmas decorations. Mrs. Clara Pope was recognized for her selection as "Clubwoman of the Year" in District Nine of the N.C. Federation of Womens' Clubs. Her local community ser vice won the award and she receiv ed a certificate and a silver bowl. The local club yearbook for 1984-1985 is also dedicated to Mrs. Pope, in recognition of her hard work and generous spirit. A NCFWC project for this year is to aid victims and family members of victims of Alzheimer's disease. Donations were collected for this project and it was decided that additional collections would be taken at each department and open meeting throughout the year. Planning for "Share Your Christmas" is underway. The Woman's Club's responsibility is to co-ordinate the community ef forts in the county's Christmas sharing with those in need. Mrs. Jack Pope and Mrs. Charles Con stantina are Co-Chairmen. In dividuals, groups, and families who want to give time, money, or used clothing, toys or household items are asked to contact one of these women. Times are being set for registering those who need help. Volunteers to help register and collect donations are being scheduled now. The report for the Second An nual Woman's Club Golf tourna ment showed a nice profit. There were fewer golfers this year, but fewer expenses. Thanks to the ef forts of Club members, sponsors, and golfers, there will be money for the club to use in a number of community betterment projects. Madden performs at Dolphin game : , -dau^?f.o? Ml,_ and Mrs. James L. Madden of Raeford, performed in a dance number for the Miami Dolphins' Veterans' Day half-time show on November 1 1 . She was chosen to be one of the 50 performers from over 250 applicants who audition ed. She performed in a jazzercize routine before a crowd of 70,000 at the Orange Bowl's Miami Philadelphia football game. Jazzercize is a body conditioning program which is designed to im prove flexibility, co-ordination, and '-lamina Music anci ,rfiythm^TrraTc?rjffi?a" precision movements of the routines an impressive and enter taining spectacle. Miss Madden studied for years with the Ann Clark School of Dance. She is a Hoke High graduate and a participant in the Miss Aberdeen competitions of 1982 and 1983. She was employed by First Security of Aberdeen before her move to Florida earlier this year. She now works for Broward Bank of Ft. Lauderdale.
