"There should not be a business in Hoke County that Is not a member off- the Chamber , " DeVane said. DeVane also told members off the board that city and county funding could.be used to pay the salary of a chamber ' executive secretary until an industrial developer is Mred. According to the representative, the secretary will be functioning as a developer until one is hired, and she will still be active in developmental programs after one is hired. . . .Chamber launches plan (Continued from page 1A) ' mullet roast designed to uplift the spirits of Hoke County residents and to let state politicians know we need help. The effort is not a political move, but one to get the state's leaders into Hoke County, said DeVane. The event, which will feature freshly netted mullet roasted around a large outdoor fire, will be held at the Raeford Civic Center on December 12 at 6 p.m. Tickets will be $5 per person to cover expenses. The roast is being underwritten by Southern National Bank. DeVane also encouraged board members to begin actively seeking new members. The DSS office has just been swamped with requests for butter and cheese, he said. "I have a feeling that next Mon day we are going to have an over whelming crowd," Witherspoon said. The program had been suspend ed by the director until the begin ning of December because some people were suspected of giving fraudulent information. These suspect cases had to be checked out, said Witherspoon. Tlie Hoke County DSS has also taken a record number of applica tions for low income energy assistance. Last year, the department took 1,157 applications, said Withers poon. This year, DSS has already taken 1,281 applications and there are four days left to file. On November 18, the apparent theft of a bicycle was reported to the Sheriff's Department by " Carolyn McLean. The bike was taken out of McLean's yard, reports say. The next day the bike was recovered by Deputy C. E. Harris from a ditch, reports say. John Manning reported his home entered on November 15. According to reports. Manning had bought the house and was in the process of remodeling when the break -in occurred. . There was $231 worth of tools taken, reports say. A 19-inch black and white televi sion set and a stereo were taken when the home of Carlee Lewis was entered on November 16, reports say. The loss in the break-in was repotted at $545." Truck recovered after stakeout By Ed Miller Charles- Edward Johnson, .a Raeford man, was - in the Hoke County Jail Monday, under $5,200 bond ' after, being charged with truck theft, driving while. impaired" (DWI) and hit and run. According to Raeford Police reports, the truck in question,' a 1973 Toyota pick-up, was stolen, wrecked and recovered within a matter of hours. The case opened at about 11:15 p.m. last Wednesday when a wreck was reported on West Prospect Avenue near Magnolia Street, Police Chief Leonard Wiggins said. A car driven by Clarence Sim mons was struck in the rear by the Toyota And the driver left the scene of the accident in the truck, Wig-~ gins said. ? The truck was reported heading toward Main Street, Wiggins said. Later in the evening, the Police Department received a call saying the truck was parked at the old Na tional Guard Armory. Following up on the call, Raeford Police Sergeant Jack Mar tino staked out the vehicle until a driver, Charles Johnson, 23, returned and drove the truck away, Wiggins said. Minutes later, the truck was stopped, and Martino arrested Johnson, Wiggins said. According to the Chief, the truck was apparently stolen from Hajrley Earl Johnson; of Raeford. The owner of the truck and the suspect are brothers, Wiggins said. there was little damage, S25,' done to the vehicle driven by Sim mons; however, there was about $600 damage done to the allegedly stolen truck, Wiggins said. Sometime after the wreck and before the recovery of the stolen vehicle, the truck was reported stolen to the Hoke County Sheriff's department, deputies say. Recovery of the vehicle happen ed so quickly after the report was filed that a memo was never broad cast on the truck, sheriff's reports say. Deaths & Funerals Herbert S. McLean Herbert Smith McLean, 64, died Monday evening. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the Raeford Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. John Ropp. Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Sara McLean; one sister, Mrs. Carolyn David of Greensboro. Crumpler Funeral Home served the family. WUIiam Dimps William "Good Blood" Dimps, 60, of the Queenmore Community died at his home on November 12. He was a custodian at Howell Drug Store on Main Street in Raeford. . ... ... . Ftineral Services were held on November 17 at the Silver Grove Baptist Church and were con ducted by Rev. W.K. Mitchell. Burial was in the church cemetery. Good Blood was a nickname given to Dimps because of his wiU ingness to help others in his com munity. Dimps is survived by two nieces: Shirley Dimps and Mrs. Evelyn Dimps of New York; one nephew: Robert Dimps of New York. Doby's Funeral Home assisted the family, Bessie M. Carter Mrs. Bessie Mae Carter, 84, died Friday at her home in Raeford. Funeral Services were held at 3 p.m. at the Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Clinton, by Rev. Russell Knoles. Burial was in Harnett Church Cemetery. Survivors are her son: Sharkie Carter of Clinton; her daughter: Mrs. Russell Knoles of Raeford; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two step grand children and five step great grand children. ?j The family was assisted by Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Clinton. Evander McNeill Burlington Mills employee Evander McNeill of Clay Street in Raeford died last week in Moore Memorial Hospital. He was 62. Funeral Services were held Wednesday at the Rockfish Grove Free Will Baptist Church by Elder William McArn. McNeill is survived by one daughter: Ruth Baker of Fayet teville; three sons: Dennis Baker of Fayetteville; Willie Van Baker and Curtis McPhatter of Raeford; four sisters: Mrs. Sarah Ray, Bessie McArn, Purcell Monroe and Mag gie Covington all of Raeford; four brothers: James Matthew McNeill and Henry McNeill of Long Island, New York, Elder William McNeill of Fayetteville and Rev.
