Lumber Bridge News By Lib Sumner Attendance was fair for morning worship service at the Baptist church Sunday. Rev. Henry L. Foster's sermon topic was: 'Three Steps In Relationships." The Christmas Cantata: "O Come, Let Us Adore Him" presented Sunday night by the chancel choir and the nativity scene by the children's choir was well attended. The Cantata was directed by Mrs. Mavis Foster and Henry Foster, pastor and narrator. Everyone was invited to a social in the Fellowship Hall following the service. * ? ? The annual Christmas Dinner of the Woman's Missionary Union of Lumber Bridge Baptist Church was held on Monday evening, Dec. 3rd at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Henry L. Foster in St. Pauls. . Each member brought a dish for their "International" dinner. The menu consisted of South American stew, Mexican corn bread, tossed salad, honey-spice bread, Am brosia, french nuts, Macadamia nuts, coffee and Russian tea. Fif teen guests attended. After dinner a brief program en titled, "Because I Love Him ... i will Serve Him," was presented by Mrs. Foster. In a study of business founders, researchers found that half had parents who had owned their own businesses. Successful drive On November 30 and December 1, Chapter 17 of the Disabled American Veterans held a DAV Forget-Me-Not Drive throughout Raeford. The Drive was supported by nearly 80 members of the Hoke High School Junior ROTC. The High School students helped man 7 different locations after school on Friday and all day Saturday. The entire operation was organized by Gary Wieiand, (left), the area recruiter for the National Guard and supported by Headquarters Company, 2/252 Armor, North Carolina National Guard. The two day drive raised S744 for the local chapter of the DA V. The chapter plans to use the money raised to provide recreation and support for local Disabled Veterans at the V.A. The ceremony was held at the Raeford United Methodist Church which sponsored Scout Troop 404. David is a member of Troop 404. Participating in the ceremony were William J. Butler of Grove City, Ohio; Michael Burch, John Cabeza, and Julian Butler Jr. of Laurinburg; Dr. John Ropp, David Scull, Julian D. Butler and Scouts of Troop 404 from Raeford. David was a charter member of Cub Pack 404 earning all rank ad vancements and achievements, God and Family Award and the Arrow of Light. Since becoming a scout in September of 1978, David has earned 36 Merit Badges, is a brotherhood member of Klahican Lodge #331, has earned the Historical Trail' Award, World Conservation Award, Cape Fear Trails Award, Paul Bunyan Ax man, Camp Bowers Builders, and Mile Swim B.S.A. In July of 1981, he attended the Nation Scout Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia and in 1982 went to Philamont Scout Ranch at Cimmaron, New Mexico. To complete the requirements for Eagle Scout David chose to restore the cemetery and grave site of Dr. Hector McLean and his family. Dr. McLean was founder of Edinborough Medical College, the first medical college in North Carolina. The project was to benefit the heritage of Hoke County. Much time was spent planning and com pleting this project. Christmas Cantata planned The Adult Choir of First Baptist Church of Raeford will present their Christmas Cantata on December 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the church sanctuao' The cantata is for congregation and choir. This means that eveyone who is in attendance will have the oppor tunity to participate in both the speaking and in the singing. The congregation will hear the familiar passages of the Christmas prophecy and story and will sing the familiar carols of Christmas. There will be many special numbers by the choir and by soloists. The community is invited. Farmer completes Air Force course Airman Garland Farmer Jr., nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Edens of Rural Route 2, Raeford, has graduated from the U.S.. Air Force aircraft maintenance course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. During the course, students were taught aircraft maintenance fun damentals to repair and service one- and two-engine jet aircraft. Maintenance management and documentation was also taught to assess aircraft readiness capability. Carter decorated Staff Sgt. Anthony K. Carter, son of Nash K. and Lucy J. Carter of Rural Route 2, Red Springs, has been decorated with the second award of the Army Commenda tion Medal in Augusta, Ga. The Army Commendation Medal is awarded to those in dividuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the perfor mance of their duties on behalf of the Army. Carter is a medical laboratory specialist with Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center. His wife, Velma, is the daughter of Hubert and Myrtle Lowery of Rural Route 1, Shannon.
