? ? ? Letters continued (Continued from page 3B) The band performs with limited funds and a small amount of equipment doing the best they possibly can. It is very unfair and misleading for such an article to be written about this group and their leader. The facts stated are untrue and the implications unjustified. The liartfiihip of the band has never mishandled anything concerning the band nor mislead the members. Why is Hoke High band singled out here? None of the surrounding area competition bands attended the parade. This writer has taken an incident without getting all the true facts and has blown it all out of perspec tive. I think he owes the Hoke High Band director, band members, band supporters, and the entire community a public apology. Maybe the newspaper would do well in the future to check out their writers and their viewpoints before publishing them. Nora Scull Involved with band To the Editor: I have been a member of the band program here in Hoke Coun ty for the past six years. My family has been directly involved with the band program and its director, Jimmy James, for the past 14 years. This is nothing new to me. Throughout these 14 years, my family and I have been involved in a great many fund raising projects to benefit the band. With the money raised by these projects the band has done a great many things and has earned a statewide reputation. It has taken quite some time to get to the present level at which it now stands, but it only takes one derogatory letter as was printed in the December 13 issue of The News-Journal to tear all of this work down. A great deal of the band members have asked me to write this letter because they were per sonally offended. One doesn't how much it hurts to read a letter that destroys everything you have worked so hard to achieve. I was outraged at the moment I completed reading this letter because there are several untruths in this letter. The fact of the matter is that we traveled to just one away game at Tory Sanford due to the lack of funds. It would be very difficult to take this group^nywhere while there is no money To transport than. The band has never, charged a fee. In the future it be greatly ap preciated if writers would get their facts straight before they write another such article. I would also like to challenge the editor to attend the next band com petition and see just how much all of us kids give for our band and our director. Thank you. Randy Scull Hoke High Band Capt. Newspaper failed In band reporting Dear Editor: I have just finished reading the article entitled "Band plays sour note for Hoke Co. residents," in this week's News -Journal. All fall I have felt that your paper has neglected its duties in in forming the public of events of the Hoke High band. It is apparent you never miss reporting on sports events. There is nothing wrong with that, however, I feel the events in which the band competed in this fall, was as great a sport as ball, golf, tennis etc. It seems late in the year for you to decide that "the Hoke High band distinguished itself in statewide competition to become rated as one of the best marching groups in the state." Why did you suddenly decide to report this, since you certainly did not report on any of the events during th^ competition. From the lack of earlier repor ting of band events and the sudden interest in their activities, it ap pears that someone has been sitting on the sidelines waiting for a mistake to be made, if in fact, there really was one made. I don't know the circumstances of this particular event, but I do know that your paper has failed to praise the band and their directors for outstanding accomplishments but you jumped at a chance to con demn them. Again you have failed in your reporting. Why did you miss reporting on the outstanding per formance of the Upchurch Jr. Enviro-Chevn Co. EXTERMINATORS HOUSEHOLD PEST CONTROL 120 W. EDINBOROUGH AVE. Sincerely, Mrs. Eva P. Miller Old time Christmas remembered ? Most of us long for an "old time" Christmas. What do we mean by that? If we go back a few decades, many families were hard pressed to earn enough to pay the rent and buy enough food and clothes to keep going. We didn't have as many automobiles. We didn't have as many work saving appliances and gadgets. To think about it, we were at war 1941-45, 1950-53, and 1963-72. We didn't have tl\e varie ty of foods, toys and amusements we have today, nor television. But the "old time" Christmas was often more fulfilling. Why? Perhaps it was because we thought of it as a time for family reunions, days and evenings of meals, fellowship and games together, etc. The super-abundance of amusements, automobiles, televi sion, etc. seems to leave less time for family pursuits, family discus sions, meditation and Thanksgiv ing. MARTIN ... With Democrats Cliff Blue People and Issues Jim Green, and Edward Knox on the advisory panel it appears that Governor -elect James Martin is looking to build a strong Republican leadership, along with the GOP powers that put him across. With former Governor Holshouser being a leader in the Republican Party, the organiza tion could be the leader in North Carolina for some years to come. DUKE UNIVERSITY ... H. Keith Brodie has been selected to succeed Duke President Terry San ford who has served for 15 years as president of Duke University. PAST ELECTIONS ... With the 1984 elections now history, we can write a little about it. Early last year when candidates for the Democratic nomination were making their bids, U.S. Senator Hollings of South Carolina proposed a freeze on federal spending. He said this was the best way to reduce the deficit, that such cuts across the board were fair and would be understood and supported by the public and bureaucrats. Hollings, of course, whom many thought the best qualified Democrat, was like Senator Bob Dole, a quick, incisive wit. Yet Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Carter and Reagan all have possessed a thrusting, blunt humor. In recent days, ironically, the Reagan Administration has come around to the idea that a freeze on spending is the correct approach to a deficit reduction. ?RICH* DEANS ...
