considering plan for zoning (Continued from page 1A) available and will be used in the position, Witherspoon said in the meeting. Commissioners also will allow the local Health Department to hold an additional chest X-ray clinic each month if needed and sanctioned by the Hoke County Health Board. Kathy Ellis, Nursing Supervisor at the Health Department told commissioners that since McCain Hospital closed as a tuberculosis center, the number of chest X-rays given at the department has almost doubled. In 1983, before McCain closed, the Health Department gave 290 chest X-rays. Since October of 1983, the department has given 545 X-rays, Ellis said. The Health Department has also experienced some difficulties in bavins the X-rays developed and read, she said. Once per month, a traveling doctor comes to the Health Department and reads film, .she said adding that it also takes two to three weeks for the film to be developed since McCain closed. Because of the time factor, many patients who have stepped in off the street with chest ailments have been referred to family doc ton. "If they are sick, they don't want to wait two weeks for the film to come back," Ellis said. Ellis also informed commis sioners that a work load increase is experienced every time a new case of tuberculosis is discovered in the county. Also since there were only two additional cases of the disease discovered in the county last year, there is a possibility of a great number of additional X-rays with each case. Not only do actual cases of TB have to be filmed, family members who may have contracted the disease must also be X-rayed at least once every three months, she said. Commissioners also voted to pay S2S1.88 to an X-ray technician who has been working at the Health Department clinics since March unpiud. Commissioners also made reap pointments to some county boards and commissioners. Anthony Oxendine, Dr. Ramnik Zota and J. D. McAllister were reappointed to the Hoke County Health Board.
