Vain attempt The sun (middle center) made a fruitless attempt to burn through the heavy layer of fog which blanketed Hoke County and downtown Raeford this week. Neutralizers help pet odor DEAR DOCTOR: What can I do for pet stains and odors in carpet? I have tried disinfectants and air fresheners, but the odors stay. ANSWER: There are commer cial products available known as odor neutralizes that chemically change the urine and fecal chemicals that cause the smell. One such product is called FON. The initials stand for feline odor neutralizes The product seems to do a good job, but is better on fresh stains than those that have been in the carpet or furniture for some time. Also, the manufacturer states that stains that have been treated first with vinegar or ammonia will pro bably not respond well to this pro duct. Another product I can suggest is Pet Odor Neutralizer (Pon) Distributed by Service master. If the odor causing stains are old or cover a large area of your carpet these "odor neutralizes" would probably not be any less expensive than having the carpets commer cially cleaned. It can't get out of the yard now because of a fence. Wilt it survive the winter there? Can we do anything to help it get ready for the winter? ANSWER: Turtles are cold blooded animals that go into a low state of metabolism during the cold winter months. Like the frogs and toads, they find a safe place to burrow during the winter and will do very well in your back yard if there is an area of loose dirt that will permit it to form a burrow. If it is a box turtle as your letter states, he eats earthworms, lettuce, cabbage, apples, insects and snails. Make some food's available for it but don't expect it to eat just what you offer. Several states have laws that protect land turtles from being kept and they can be collected only by permit. My advise is to make food available for it and let it live outside as nature intended. DEAR DOCTOR: We have a young short-haired dog in 4 ood health. She has a dog pen and a dog house but we bring her into our house at night. When winter comes, what temperatures are too cold for an outside dog? Is it better to bring her in at night? ANSWER: If the dog has a well built and insulated dog house that is small enough for her to heat with her own body then she can live out side all winter. When the temperature is below 0 degrees fahrenheit, give her extra protec tion by bringing her into an attach ed garage or putting a light bulb in the house to add extra heat. Don't bring her into the house at night during the cold weather and then expect her to spend the day out side. It would be too hard on her to try to adapt to first one temperature extreme and then the other. ? She must have more good quali ty food during the winter to allow her body to form enough heat to keep her warm. Make certain she has unfrozen water to drink three or four times each day. If you will give her good shelter and good food, she will do very well qm^ide this winter.
