A Little Local News
By Kay Thomas
I learned this week that Leisl
Newsome of Southern Pines has
been selected as a district winner in
the Morehead Scholarship Com
petition.
Leisl' s parents are Larry and
Linda Scarborough Newsome and
her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
T.C. Scarborough of Raeford.
Miss Newsome and her family
must be very proud. I am proud,
and she doesn't even know me.
I think it seems a very short time
ago that Anne Dickson and I rode
to Hoke High every morning with
Linda in her grey Studebaker.
? ? ?.
I have a question for Raeford
folks who remember 1947. Who
would have been "a lady from
Raeford, a Scottish balladeer"
who appeared before the Moore
County Historical Association in
the holiday season of 1947?
The Raeford woman and two
students from Chapel Hill enter
tained at the Association dinner
dance. One of the UNC students
was "a youthful baritone" named
Andy Griffith.
* ? ?
Thanks to Sam Morris and
"Around Town", the Hoke Coun
ty Historical Association is shap
ing up. Dues are $10 per
household, Palmer Willcox is the
Treasurer. A number of caring
people have sent checks signifying
"I care, let me help."
A very interesting pattern has
developed. At least one-third of
the new members are out-of
county Hoke Countians-of-the
heart. They are certainly ap
preciated. Their sentiments make
me feel that our small town must
have something special to preserve.

The Woman's Club of Raeford
plans to meet for the annual
January covered-dish supper on
January 8 at 6:30. From the supper
and v business meeting, the group
will move to the Library Con
ference Room for the performance
of the N.C. String Quartet at 8
p.m.
The January Open Meeting of
the Cub has traditionally been
dedicated to an Arts Festival co
sponsored with the Raeford Jr.
Woman's Club. This year, plans
have been changed. The club is in
viting Raeford Juniors and
Chaminade Music Club members
to join them for dinner. The con
cert and the social hour to follow
are being hosted by the Chaminade
Music Club.
A special guest for the dinner
meeting will be Greg Hathaway.
He has been asked to report on the
activities and aims of the local
Alzheimer's support group. The
Woman's Club plans to help this
group in some project. The
General Federation of Woman's
Clubs has adopted Alzheimer's
help as a special project for this
and next year.
Christmas Followup
Mrs. Joyce McDiarmid reports
that the Club Christmas contribu
tion to Sandhills Youth Center was
very fine. Club members provided
twenty homemade layer cakes for
the SYC Christmas party. Shaving
cream, boxes of stationery, cartons
of cigarettes, mens' toiletries, and
one hundred pairs of socks were
collected for gifts for the men.
Mrs. Sadie Constantino and
Mrs. Clara Pope report that Share
Your Christmas-1984 represented
the hard work and dedication of all
the club. Final tallies show that 208
households received help (totaling
more than 1000 people) and that
around $2,300 was contributed
and spent. The clothing, food and
household items cannot be given a
monetary value, but the contribu
tions were nice and the amounts
overwhelming.
Some help came from outside
the club, but this year's communi
ty project was carried through by
club members. As money was
donated, shopping was done for
fruit, sugar, candy, children's
clothing, and a few small toys (col
oring books and crayons). The
toys which were distributed were
those which had been donated.
The dolls were those which had
been given and then dressed lov
ingly by ladies of Hoke County.
The leaders of these Christmas
projects are thankful for the sup
port, time, energy and money
which helped others at Christmas.
The club is very grateful for the
leadership of these women,, for
their enthusiasm, and the way they
gave of themselves so generously
this holiday season.
