DEADLINES: Weddings A Engagements, Thursday 5p.m. Other Social Items, Monday 5 p.m. A little light news Greg Hathaway came to a woman's club meeting last week to talk about Alzheimer's disease and how people can help each other. ^ Hathaway is President of the Duke Alzheimer's Chapter. He is helping with chapters in Fayet teville and Laurinburg. He works in Fayetteville as an ar tist/designer. He and his family live here in Raeford. The major thrust of Alzheimer's volunteer groups is support for the caregivers. "Caregiver" is the term k used to the family member or lov 9 ed one who provides constant, dai ly attention for the victim of this disease. The unremitting demands on the energy and patience of Engagement announced Mr. and Mrs. Willie James Breeden of Raeford announce the engagement of their daughter. Ruby Denise, to Reuben Eugene Raynor. Raynor is the son of Mr. h and Mrs. James Raynor of Fayet teville. The bride-elect is a graduate of Hoke High School, the groom elect graduated from Westover Senior High in Fayetteville. Both are students in Computer Science and Management at Ruttedge Col lege in Fayetteville. The couple plans to live in Asheboro where he is employed by Stuart Furniture * Industries. ' The wedding is planned for January 26 at 3 p.m. in the Hoke Civic Center. A reception will follow the ceremony. Friends and relatives of the couple are invited. caregivers makes life strained and exhausting. They need the support of understanding friends. Alzheimer's now has no cure. There have been numerous "break throughs" in determining its causes and treatment. According to Hathaway, none have proven to be "the answer." There are many research projects in progress. Until answers are found, educating the public is an important goal for Alzheimer's volunteers. NO POItCHAiC NtCSUAft Y POM i j Woman's Club Education Garden Public Affairs The Arts The January Open Meeting of the Raeford Woman's Club was held January 8 at the First Baptist Church of Raeford. The four departments of the club were well represented for the covered-dish supper. Members of the Junior Woman's Club and the Chaminade Music Club were in vited for supper. Greg Hathaway, President of the Duke Chapter of Alzheimer's volunteers, was guest speaker. Learning about and contributing to Alzheimer's support is a major club project for this year. The N.C. Federation of Women's Clubs is the first organization to sponsor this work on a statewide basis. Alzheimer's Disease is a brain disorder which causes loss of memory. The cause remains a mystery and there is no cure. The treatment and support of victims Plaque winner Evelyn Ashburn, secretary of W.O.W. Lodge 6179, displays the " WOMAN OF WOOD CRAFT" plaque she received at a WOW meeting Tuesday night, January 8. Mrs. Ashburn was chosen by her fellow members to receive this award which is earned by faithful service to the Lodge and fellow members. She also received a lapel pin and a Cross fountain pen. President Mary Ruth Haire made the presentation, with 14 members in attendance. Delegates to the State Convention to be held in Raleigh in April were elected as follows: Evelyn Ashburn, Peggy Calloway and Mary Ruth Haire. Alternates are Bertha Hendrix, Louise Taylor and Ruth Wilkerson. and helping thtir families are the volunteers' focus. A donation was made to Hathaway's group by the Woman's Club. He explained that donated money is used locally to help with purchasing materials for distribution and specific local ex penses. Any left is sent to the state chapter at Duke. The same policy is in effect there. Any remaining money is sent to national head quarters. In a brief business session, the club members voted to give SI 00 to the Hoke High Band to help with their Inaugural Parade expenses. The women moved across the street to the Hoke Public Library for the concert of the N.C. Sym phony's String Quartet. The Chaminade Music Club sponsored the concert and hosted a social hour after it. Personal Mr. and Mrs. Rick Anderson of Memphis, Tennessee spent last Tuesday with her grandmother Mrs. A.J. Freeman. Hillcrest 4-H elects leaders At the last Hillcrest 4-H club meeting new officers for 1985 were enlisted. The president is Leah Hendrix, vice president is Priscilla Carson, secretary-treasurer is Leslie Ashburn, the reporter is Kimberly Potter and recreation leaders are Patrick McNeill and Jason Melton. After the installation the club members played two games dealing with communications. The games were lead by the of ficers and adult leaders.
