Patterns in the snow The tires of the few vehicles which were on the streets of Raeford Sunday made interesting patterns as they crossed the first snowfall of the season. Crawfish helping nerve study By Bob Cairns N.C. State Univ. Thousands of Americans have been sentenced to life in a wheelchair, because nerves damag ed during automobile accidents deteriorated before the victims could reach a hospital. "When the nerve fibers that control muscle function in humans are injured, their deterioration begins immediately," said Dr. Robert M. Grossfeld, a North Carolina State University zoologist. Grossfeld believes that if this degeneration of the nerves can be slowed, then the severity and in cidence of paralysis might be reduced. To learn more about nerve degeneration, Grossfeld is study ing the crayfish, an invertebrate which possesses one of the simplest nervous systems known. According to the NCSU Winter jogging can be healthy If you enjoy jogging in warm weather, there's no reason you should quit in cold weather. The North Carolina Medical Society says winter jogging is healthy and enjoyable if you take the right precautions. The main problem is to avoid overdressing. As the temperature falls you will feel tempted to throw on too many extra clothes to ward off the cold. These extra garments will weigh you down and make your running more difficult and uncomfortable. The body's first natural heating priority is to keep the head and tor so warm. Should these areas begin to cool, extra heat is directed to them by the body's regulating mechanisms. One more point, it is also beneficial to take a little extra time to do stretching and warm-up exer cises in cold weather. zoologist, injured sensory and motor nerve fibers in the crayfish deteriorate at different rates, which makes the crayfish an in teresting subject for nerve degeneration research. "Sensory nerve fibers responsi ble for sensation (to and) from the claw, when severed, deteriorate as rapidly as those found in the ner vous system of man," he said. "But when the motor nerve fibers which control the muscles of that same claw are cut, they degenerate quite slowly. They may remain functionally and structurally sound for months. "If we can gain an understan ding of the mechanism by which these particular motor nerve fibers in the crayfish manage to survive, we'll be in a better position to look for ways to apply this knowledge to the vertebrate," he said. Grossfeld has collaborated on some of this work with Dr. George Bittner of the University of Texas at Austin. Grossfeld says both and Bittner believe that the life-prolonging mechanism might be found in the glial cells, a protective sleeve of cells which surround the nerve fibers. Although glial cells make up more than 70 percent of the cells in the human central nervous system, "surprisingly little is known about their function," Grossfeld said. "My suspicion is that glial cells provide nutrients to the severed motor fibers in the crayfish, and by doing so, retard nerve deterioration," he said. "We want to learn whether these glial cells provide molecules to the injured fibers, and if so, what kinds of molecules," he said. Presented award John W. Jones, son of Mrs. J. A.
