Bucks win two, girls lead league In a squeaker, the Hoke County High School Bucks slid by West Robeson by one point with a final score of 56-55 in last Tuesday night's game in Pembroke. The Bucks also topped Lumber ton on Friday, while the girls' team remained first in the conference with two easy wins. One reason for the close score at West Robeson was that the team was "slow and sluggish," said Head Coach Greg Killings worth. According to the coach, the game was played during the middle of examination week and many of the players were tired. "We played like we were behind instead of ahead," Killingsworth said. The team also missed some crucial free throws, said the coach. The high scorer for the game was Tony McRae who dumped in 20 points. Although McRae was the only team member in double figures, Bruce Moore and Marco Pickett each put in nine points and Ronnie Melvin put in seven for the team. Carpenter, Woods win at UNC invitational Terrell Carpenter and Don Woods, ' both members of the Hoke High Track Team, par ticipated in a University of North Carolina indoor invitational track meet last week and placed highly in their events. A Hoke High junior, Carpenter placed number one in the 50-yard dash with a time of 5.3 seconds. Carpenter also placed second in the long jump. He led the competition for the entire meet but was beat by the final jump of Myers Park student A.1 Blake. Carpenter jumped 23 feet, five and a quarter inches for the second place finish. Blake's jump measured 23 feet, 1 1 and one half inches. Don Woods placed fourth in the two-mile cross-country run. Woods finished the course in 10 minutes and 22 seconds. Woods and Carpenter will join the other members of the Hoke High Track Team to get ready for their season opening on March 14.
