If he can get ahold of any of my hosiery, he destroys it. I'm afraid this might make him sick if he swallows this material. What can I do to stop this habit ? You And Your Pet ANSWER: I'm afraid that prevention is the best answer here. It sounds as if he likes either the taste or feel of the hosiery and has developed a vice. It is one that can get him in trouble in two ways. First with you. Then he can become seriously ill if he swallows a long piece of the hosiery because it can result in the intestines becoming bunched up on the material and causing a blockage. Your best bet is to be extremely careful with the hosiery and never let him get within striking distance of it. DEAR DOCTOR: My cat recently had a litter of four kittens. When do they need veterinary at tention? When will they be ready for their new owners? ANSWER: Assuming the kittens have no health problems they should be checked by your veterinarian at 6 to 7 weeks of age for their first vaccine. They will normally receive a temporary protection against Feline Distemper and two forms of respiratory diseases at this time. It is also a good idea to take a small sample of stool to the office at that time so that it can be checked for worms. If treatment is necessary it can be given at that time. The kittens should be able to go to the new owners as soon as they are weaned, seven weeks of age. Did you know this about cats? Cats perspire through its sweat glands located in the pads of its paws. Cats can see six times better than humans at night because of their large pupils. Cats sleep twice as much as other animals. When cats drink they lap four or five times with their tongue before they swallow. Because cats have narrow shoulders and their front legs are close together they can walk long narrow ledges. . . .
