Kaeford students honored ait Peace Three Raeford residents are among the V students on the fall semester Dean's List at Peace Col lege. They are Jodi Lynn Freeze, daughter of Mrs. Oku K. Lopez of Ruby Street and Mack L. Freeze of New Bern; Laura Benton McLeod, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James B. McLeod of N. Main Street.; and Carta June Myers, daughter of Mrs. Kay B. Myers of S. Bethel Street and Mr. C. Stuart Myers of Altavista, Virginia. To be eligible for the Dean's List at Peace a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.30 out of a possible 4.0, receive passing grades in all subjects and carry at least 12 hours of course work. Peace is a two-year college for women offering associate degrees in liberal arts, business and music. DeVane speaks to literacy group Among those braving the 8? temperature on January 21, to at tend Scotland County Literacy Council's Annual Meeting was Daniel DeVane of the North Carolina House of Represen tatives. In his brief remarks to the more than 30 people in attendance, DeVane praised the work of the literacy volunteers and their con- . tribution to the educationally disadvantaged adults. He also spoke of the need to reach potential adult non- readers earlier in life while they were still in school in order to avoid the high statistics presently seen in North Carolina. Anne Tindall, Director of Scotland County Literacy Council said in making the announcement that while the illiteracy statistics in this area are somewhat higher than the state we have some good things going for us. Glisson was accepted at Camp bell, but plans to attend, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Club boning up for Horse Bowl quiz By Karyl Fahrenbruck On January 8, the 4-H Horse Club began working on a Horse Bowl Team. The group is going over the horse bowl questions, and on February 9 will be going to the District Horse Bowl at Lenoir Community College, Kinston. These officers were elected earlier when the group went to the State Fair in October: Craig Koonce - President. Harold Parinte - Vice President, Christi Robinette - Secretary, Tammy Harris - Treasurer, Karyl Fahren bruck - Reporter and Michelle Oldham - Project Leader. Program committee members are: Becky Peck - Chairman, Catherine Quick and Lisa Lee. Schools are bracing Ibr dental health Dr. Bob Nelson, superintendent of the Hoke County School System, is busier than usual this month. He is helping to boost the point total of area schools par ticipating in Children's Health Month, which takes place during February. "Many classrooms began earn ing credit for dental health ac uities when school started last fall. By participating in such ac tivities as swishing with flouride mouthrinse, talking to a local den tist, and a variety of otheA events, the students have learned the im portance of dental health care. Tbey also earned points of achieve ment," said Dr. Michael D. White, North Carolina Public Health Dentist assigned to Hoke County. Children's Dental Health Month is sponsored annually by the N.C. Dental Society; the Dental Health Section, Division of Health Ser vices, N.C. Department of Human Resources; and the N.C. Depart ment of Public Instruction. According to White, school principals may earn points to b? added to the schools' overall scores by engaging in specific activities during the two weeks of February 4- 15. Superintendents and/or ad ministrators may also boost point totals of schools in their areas by wearing a "Let's Get Dental" but ton, publishing a newspaper article relating to Children's Dental Health Month, and participating in various activities. The N.C. Dental Society will provide a plaque and cash award to all schools achieving 1,200 or more points. District dental societies will present a plaque and cash prize to all schools achieving 1,000 - 1,199 points. Cash prizes may vary in each district. Schools that achieve 800 or more points will receive a special certificate of recognition, awarded jointly by the N.C. Dental Society, N.C. Depart ment of Public Instruction, the Hoke County Health Department, the Division of Health Services, as well as our Racford dentists, Dr. Bullard and Dr. Johnson. DEC A students win On January 18, seven members of the Hoke County High School DECA Chapter travelled to Troy for District Competition and four came away winners. Those competing from Hoke were Teresa Dudley, Dede McLean, Joyce McRae, Renee Priest, Brenda Pureed, and Tuwanda Quick. The girls competed among 350 students from nine other schools in this district. Awards are given for written tests, performance with judges, and the overall event. Those receiving awards were Dede McLean in Apparel and Ac cessories, Teresa Dudley in Food Marketing, Renee Priest and Tu wanda Quick in General Mer chandising. Teresa was also one of the six finalists in her event. Tu wanda won the first place trophy in the performance event and the overall series event in General Merchandising.
