Allen named to FSU honor Genise Mcrchcl Allen, the daughter of Mr.' and Mrs. Bobby O. Allen of Raeford, has made the Dean's List at Fayetteville State University with a grade point average (O.P.A.) of 3.6 for the Fall Semester 1984-85. In order for students to nuke the Dean's List at Fayetteville State University they must earn a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or better with the successful completion of at least 12 credits. LREMC offers youth tour High school juniors and sophomores whose parents are members of Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation are in vited to apply for trips this summer to Washington, D.C., and White Lake. The trips are offered as part of the co-op's Youth Opportunities Program. Two juniors will be selected for the Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington and two sophomores will be selected to attend the N.C. Cooperative Council Youth Camp at Camp R.J. Peeler at White Lake. Applicants, who must attend any high school in Robeson, Scotland, Hoke or Cumberland counties, must submit by March IS a 200 - to 300 - word essay on the topic: "What are the differences between cooperatives and other types of businesses?" Selection of the winning essays will be made by an independent committee selected by LREMC. The Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington is scheduled for June 8-14. The N.C. Reprocessed wool means wool fibers were once woven, knitted or felted into wool fabric, but the original fabric was never used. In stead, it was reduced back to fibers which were then reprocessed into a new fabric. All-State band members On February 2, these Upchurch Junior High School band students were selected by auditions from over 500 prospective musicians to make the Southeastern District Junior High AU-State Band. This Is the first year Hoke County students have ever participated in the junior high auditions. Cape Fear High School was the site of auditions consisting of scales, sight reading and performance of a prepared solo. Quali fying for the two 75-pieee bands are ((L to R): Tanya Baker - clarinet, and alternates Dawn Brock - clarinet, Priscilla Canon ? mallet percussion, and Sophia Locklear - alto saxophone. The clinic will be held May 3-5 at Monroe High School Gil Clark is Director of Bands at Upchurch Junior High School. Flora Macdonald taps top students Last week Flora Macdonald Academy completed its third six week grading period and released the names of the following students in grades 4 through 12 whose cumulative averages placed them on one of the academy's honor rolls. The Headmaster's Honor Roll requires a minimum average of 95 and students on F.M.A. Honor Roll maintained averages of 90 to 94 for the grading period. The Special Honor Roll is com posed of students who raised their average at least five points over the preceeding grading period. Community involvement on agenda for FH A club Parent participation, personal enlightment, and community in volvement has been the theme for the Hoke County High School Future Homemakers of America in recent months. Joyce Conlon, from the Life Center in Fayetteville was guest speaker on "Drug and Alcohol Abuse." Parents were invited to attend along with club members from , HOSA, with their club advisor, Mrs. Sally Young. Conlon gave a very informative talk. After the film presentation, time was allowed for questions from the audience. John Ward nominated for ECU scholarship A Raeford resident along with 53 outstanding high school seniors from across the state and nation have been nominated as semifinalists for the selection of the first five University Scholars awards at East Carolina Universi ty. Hoke High Senior John D. Ward of Raeford has been nominated. The University Scholars is a ma jor new, privately-financed scholarship program designed to attract academically-gifted students with demonstrated leader ship potential to ECU. Eventually the program will sup- ( port at least 20 $3,000 University Scholars award each year. The first five recipients will be chosen this spring and enter the university in the fall semester.
