This was brought to ray at tention last Saturday by Tommie Upchurch concerning the deer that were removed from the old Graham's Service Station. I will try again since talking with Tom mie and hope the records will be straight. When Mrs. Gene Carter, Tom mie's daughter, heard that the sta tion was sold and that the deer would be taken down she sug gested to her father that they be given to the high school since they are known as the Hoke High Bucks. Mrs. Carter went to the school officials with her suggestion and they bought the idea. They also are going to place them on a high plat form so that they can be seen by W00*- sy They are now working on where the deer will be placed and in the The News-Journal The News-Journal is publish ed every Thursday by Dickson Press Inc. at 119 W. Now what I want to see are the Bucks on display. Like the article on Dr. Jane Carswell, items in the daily paper bring back memories of years ago in Raeford and Hoke County. An obit in a Monday's daily paper started me to thinking about old times. It was the obit of Mrs. Sarah McFadyen Brown, who died in Florida recently and was buried here on Tuesday. She was a first cousin of Neill L. McFadyen. Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the late Dr. Archibald McFadyen, a native of this section, Dr. McFadyen served in the mission fields in China for over 40 years. ? ? Be sure to join the Raeford Hoke Chamber of Commerce when someone comes by with a membership card. There is strength in numbers. ? ? ? Maybe I should play golf in cold weather. The reason I say this is that I have been confined to the house for the past few days. When a person has been active all his life, and sick rarely, it can almost make you climb the walls by being con fined. Accurate listings of what the schools own and what the equip ment is worth will be the real value of the system to Hoke schools. Steed said. Board Member Shirley Gibson asked if there were ways to get ac curate listings of school property other than with the $17,800 ser vice. If people trained as educators were taken away from their jobs to count desks, the inventory could be taken without hiring the service, Superintendent Dr. Robert Nelson said. According to Steed, teachers currently list what is in their classes on an inventory sheet. "I hope we never get into a situation where we have to testify under oath as to the validity of an inventory," Nelson said. That report is somewhat smaller than the property control report because assets that are not depreciable are not included, Perry said. . . .Officials miffed (Continued from page 1A) The state has allegedly worked out a system with the states banks that will allow anyone who gets a state check to open an account and withdraw from that account one check per month, Miller said.
