(Continued from page 1) plication for a State Historic Preservation Grant. Aocording to Cowan, the grant can be used to renovate the court house. Hunt include in the motion that the grant be requested for as much as $200,000. According to County Finance Officer Charles Davis, the more money that can be offered as mat ' ching funds, the better the chances of getting the grant. Currently, the county has $270,000 in facilities fees and pork barrel funds to offer as a match, Commission Chairman John Balfour said. Commissioners also approved a resolution to be sent to United States Senators John East and Jessie Helms and United States Representative Bill Hefner endors ing the continuation of the general revenue sharing program. According to the resolution, Hoke County has received almost $4.5 million through the program. If the county had to raise ad valorem tax rates to cover the losses of revenue sharing, rates would increase $.15, the resolution says. The revenue sharing program is scheduled to expire on September 30 of this year. A motion was also passed to allow $6,500 to be spent to finish renovations on the county office building. Currently, the space is being used for storage. Cowan said. The renovations will not only provide more office space, but a heating system that has been inac tive could be used to more evenly heat the building, said the manager. Although the commission gave Cowan permission to have the renovations completed, no moves will be made to start construction until the Buildings and Grounds Committee decides what to ao with the space, said Cowan.
