-??a" ' * * ? . ' ' BUk girls win two to retain 4-A lead In two close games, the Hoke County High School girls basket ball team retained their lead in the Southeastern 4- A Conference. On Tuesday night the Bucks held off Terry Sanford by a score of 44-41. Sheila Southerland and Brenda Melvin combined for 27 points in the game. Southerland had IS to lead the team. Hoke High was up by only one point at half-time. Friday night's game against Pinecrest proved to be a heart stopper as the girls squeaked past to win 47-46. Del Pridgen scored 13 for the Bucks and Toni Rheames followed closely with 12 points. With an overall record of 19-1 and a conference record of 11-1, Hoke County now holds a one game lead over defending con ference champions Reid Ross. The boys team split a pair last week, beating Pinecrest and losing to Terry Sanford. In Tuesday night's game in Fayetteville, the Bucks were edged out by one point as Terry Sanford won 55-54. Despite brave efforts by Tony McRae with 13 and Ronnie Melvin with 10, the Bucks could not pull it out. Bruce Moore added 9 points to the effort along with Harry Souther land who put in 6 and Mar co Pickett who dropped 5. Friday night, the Bucks downed Pinecrest 69-65. Elgin Blue led the Hoke attack scoring 18 points for the Bucks with assistance from Harry Souther land who hit for 15. Bruce Moore and Marco Pickett both had 10 in the game. Lady Eagles win title The Lady Eagles defeated Hamlet 58-19 Monday and Anson County Thursday to win the cham pionship title. Against Hamlet, the Lady Eagles had a balanced attack with three players in double figures. Jennifer Blue scored 15 points followed by Bonita Doby with 13 and Kim Craigmiles with 1 1 . Marsha Pickett scored eight points, Kristen Kelton 6, Wendy Locklear and Sharon Shaw each had two points and Tammy Stevens scored one for the Eagles 58 points. The Lady Eagles traveled to An son Thursday, February 14 to determine the championship. Knsten Kelton took charge early for the Eagles with 10 points.
