given for beating By Ed Miller A 34-year-old Raeford man was placed on five years supervised probation last week In Hoke Coun ty Superior Court after being con victed of assaulting his wife and causing her serious injuries. The wife is in Dorthea Dix Hospital for treatment, officials said Monday. Waymond Cummings, a Raeford resident, was fined $200 and ordered by Superior Court Judge Robert L. Farmer to undergo any mental health coun ciling ordered by his probation of ficer, according to court records. Cummings was also ordered not to assault his wife, Judge Farmer said in court. According to Assistant District Attorney Jean Powell, Cumming's wife was missing last Wednesday on the day of ber husband's trial. She turned up Friday amidst cir cumstances that were said to be odd by court and law enforcement officials. . A local magistrate signed a com mitment for Mrs. Cummings to be sent to Dix on the same day she re surfaced, Powell said. Information is unclear as to where she had been before Way mond brought her to the Hoke County Sheriffs Department Fri day. "At least we've got something to hold over him now," said Powell, who added that the couple have a long history of court appearances. Many times over the last few years, Mary Cummings has filed charges against her husband and then refused to testify against him in court, Powell said. This last time, the same story was re-enacted, but, instead of the charges being dropped, the state proceeded without Mary, said Powell. In open court, Powell said that Mary came to her before the case was to come to court and "basical ly begged that he not be sent to prison." For that reason, Powell recom mended to Judge Farmer that pro bation be given to the man, she said. The couple has been married 18 years and have Ave children, Powell said. In statements read in court taken from both Waymond and Mary, a "home for battered wives" was mentioned time and again. Mary had just returned from the Fayetteville sanctuary when, her husband apparently beat her the last time causing some broken ribs and seriously injuring her arm, Powell said in court. There were also bruises over a great part of her body, Powell said. ...Around Town continued (Continued from page 1) facts when I wrote about the "Singing Valentine" last week. Arrests expected for break-in The Hoke County Sheriff's Department solved an automobile break-in and larceny and recovered the allegedly stolen material within 24 hours of the incident last week. Last Saturday, a truck belonging to George Boahn was broken into and some tools and a citizens band radio were taken from it, accord ing to crime reports. An undisclosed source told Deputy C.E. Harris that a car belonging to a Hoke County juvenile was seen in the area of the alleged theft. The youth was also identified by the source, reports say. Upon questioning the driver of the car, another juvenile was im plicated, reports say. That boy was questioned and the location of the tools and the radio was uncovered, says the report. As of Monday, no charges had been made against the youths; however, Harris plans to jign papers against the driver of the car, Sheriff Dave Barrington said. In other reports from the Sheriff's Department, a man who was inihe hospital had over S3 ,500 in property apparently stolen from him. Robert Parker reported on behalf of Tom Welgoes that a Honda three-wheeled motorcycle, some skies and bindings, a tool chest, a chainsaw and some garden tools had been removed from his residence on February 17. Parkton is about 15 miles from Fayetteville and Raeford is jhst over 20 miles away, but in terms of actual telephone service distance, Raeford is within five miles of the Fayetteville exchange. According to Parnell, the Utilities Commission did not poll Fayetteville. The commission did demand a poll in Parkton and it passed, said Parnell. "It took a lot of community spirit" to get the service in Parkton, Parnell said. A civic group got the numbers of almost all the subscribers in Parkton and called them saying that they would soon be receiving a poll questional in the mail. Subscribers were urged to vote "yes" on the poll because rates would only increase to match those of Fayetteville, Parnell said. Well over 90?/o of those polled voted affirmatively, he said. Parkton also hired Raleigh attorney J. Ruffin Baily to argue the city's case before the Utilities Commission, Parnell said. Baily said Tuesday that he would be willing to help Raeford and Hoke County gain the same service. "It was a bleak situation there," Baily said about Parkton.
