A design by Tammy Stephens
has been selected for a special Day
Camp patch for use in the Pines of
Carolina Oirl Scout Council. This
announcement was made by Hoke
Field Director Emma Mims on
Sunday morning as Hoke Girl
Scouts celebrated Girls Scout Sun
day.
Design winner Tammy Stephens
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Henry B. Stephens. She is a
member of Cadet Troop #521 and
her troop Leader is Joyce Morris.
There was a twenty-county com
petition for the patch design. The
20 counties represent twenty thou
sand Girl Scouts. The design will
be stitched in a patch to be used for
three years.
The recognition of Miss
Stephens honor took place in the
Raeford United Methodist
Church. Scouts, their leaders, and
parents had gathered to be saluted
by the church. Two Girl Scouts
troops meet in the church weekly.
Miss Mims named the troops
and introduced their adult leaders.
There are fifteen Girl Scout troops
in Hoke County. They meet, in ad
dition to the two in Raeford
United Methodist, in Turlington
School, Upchurch School,
Rockfish, Queenmore, Puppy
Creek, West Hoke School and
Bowmore. A total of two hundred
girls are Scouts at several levels.
In the worship service a youth
choir of the church sang and
played orph instruments. Using the
song "He's Got the Whole World
in His Hands", the choir saluted
the scouts as "itsy, bitsy
Brownies", "jolly, jolly Juniors",
"cool cadets", "sassy, sassy
Seniors", and "loud, loud
Leaders". The Scouts themselves
sang "Girl Scouts Together"
under the direction of Choir Direc

Former resident tapped

Faye Dark Pickard, who is
formerly of Raeford and is an
associate professor of nursing at
the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill, has been appointed
director of statewide nursing ac
tivities for the Area Health Educa
tion Centers (AHEC) and coor
dinator of clinical facilities for the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill School of Nursing.
As director of statewide AHEC
nursing activities, Pickard
represents the Nursing School as
.one gf Ifre five UNC-CH health ?
sciences schools In the AHEC pro
gram and is involved in planning,
implementation and evaluation of
projects with the director of the
AHEC program and nine regional
nurse directors.
A UNC-CH faculty member
since 1960, Pickard played a major
role in establishing AHEC in
North Carolina. She was one of
five authors of the contract pro
posal' submitted to the federal
government for funding of the
AHEC program in the summer of
1972. From that proposal, a
federal contract was awarded for
$8.5 million for three years to
establish AHECs in that state.
I.
Pickard served as the Nursing
School's representative to the
AHEC system until 1973 when she
resigned to become chairman of
the Department of Nursing at
North Carolina Memorial
Hospital.
The state's AHEC program has
grown stronger and larger
throughout the years. "In North
Carolina," Pickard said, "the
legislature recognizes contribu
tions the system has made to the
people of the state and that the
AHEC program is continuing to
'"meet the' needs of Nbrtfi Caroli
nians." ?
"We are pleased to have Faye
Pickard back with us in the AHEC
program," said Dr. Eugene
Mayer, director of AHEC. "Her
assessment of our progress during
the past decade and of our poten
tial for future service will be from
a unique perspective. I know the
entire AHEC program will benefit
from her wisdom, her professional
credibility and her personal
diplomacy."
Pickard is also a graduate of
Hoke County High School and is
the daughter of Mrs. Henry Birns
tein of Raeford.
