The March open meeting of the
Woman's Club of Raeford was
held at the Hoke County Public
Library on March 5.
Each of the four departments
had prepared displays of their pro
jects and interests. Guests had
been invited to this special
membership emphasis meeting.
New members were introducdd.
Attendance was very good. The
Public Affairs Department had the
most members present. This
department was also hostess for
the meeting.
.The Scholarship Committee an
nounced that Noel Jones, a senior
at Hoke High and the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones, is the
recipient of the Sally Southall Cot
ton Scholarship.
The Arts Festival chairman, Jo
Hudson, announced that Gregory
Thompson (first place for drama)
and Jeanette Bratcher (second
place for music) were District Arts
Festival winners. Thompson will
represent the club at NCFWC
State Arts Festival on March 30.
The nominations committee
nominated the following women
for offices: Mary Lee Mather ly for
first vice-president, Daisy Canady
as second vice-president, and
Darlene Clark as secretary. These
women were elected by acclama
tion. They will be installed at the
May club banquet.
The president, Mrs. Edwards
announced that all dues will be due
by the time of the May banquet.
Members were given the oppor
tunities to sign petition]. One wss
to Gov. Martin asking speedy ac
tion on widening Hwy 401. The
other was a request to Carolina
Telephone on the matter of expan
ding telephone service.
Mr. Luke McNeill was introduc
ed by Linda McLeod of the Educa
tion Department. He presented a
video program which concentrated
on the birds in his back yard and
included footage of spring, winter,
and fall scenes in Hoke County.
Miss Charm set for July

for girls who wish to enter
America's Miss Charm Contest.
This scholarship program has
State Finals in Raleigh on July 4
through 6 at Meredith College.
The State Charm Program is in
its eighth year. It is sponsored by
the Performing Arts Association, a
non-profit organization for the
. promotion of the cultural arts.
This year over $10,000 will be
| presented to contestants in five
? categories.
: Contestants will be placed in
; these age groups: 4-6, 7-9, 10-12,
: 13-16, and 17-25. On July 6 there
will be a Tllij TUl Ptijgttiu for girls
ages 2 and 3. ThSre will also be a
"? Tiny Miss contest. There will be
competition in short party dress
and on-stage interview for both
groups.
The older five categories will
compete in three divisions: Private
interview, a 2.5 minute talent
presentation, and evening gown.
Winners of each age division will
represent North Carolina at the
National Finals in Disneyworld.

Engaged
Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Hinson
of Route 5, Raeford, announce the
engagement of their daughter,
Karen Sue Hinson, to Ashley Lee
Avery Jr. of Clinton. Avery is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Lee
Avery of Clinton.
The wedding is planned for May
5, 1985 and is to be held outdoors
at Calloway Lake on 221 West.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ralph
Maroney Jr., announce the birth
of a daughter, Jenna Brooke, on
February 25 at Cape Fear Valley
Medical Center. Her great
grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
R.K. Nash and grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Maroney Sr.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Norris
Purcell announce the birth of a
daughter, Vernetta Norrisa, on
February 25 at Cape Fear Valley
Memorial Center.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Creech
announce the birth of a daughter,
Norma Jeanna on March 1. Mrs.
Creech is the former Barbara
Holland.

Hamilton Square, N.J. announce
the birth of a son, Jeffrey John, on
March 8. Mrs. Schmidt is the
former Kathy Hawkins, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hawkins of

Parties honor Miss Townsend
A number of parties have been
given recently to honor bride-elect
Susan Townsend and her fiance
> Glen Barnes. Miss Townsend,
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R.G.
Townsend, Jr., will marry Mr.
Barnes on April 6 in the Raeford
United Methodist Church.

On February 16 a tea was hosted
by Mrs. David Scott Currie and
Mrs. Jimmie Warner in the Currie
home. All the guests were friends
from Miss Townsend's father's of
fice.
The food table was covered with
embroidered linen, and held a
silver punch bowl and cups. Punch
was served with cheese biscuits,
cake squares, open-faced sand
wiches, nuts and mints.
The hostesses gave the bride
elect a daisy corsage and gifts of
china and her chosen stainless pat
tern.

On February 17, a buffet dinner
for the bridal couple was hosted by
Donna and Gary Thomas and
Vickie and Emery Ramsey in
Fayetteville.
The party had a Valentine's
theme. The corsage for the bride
was of red carnations. Gifts were
tools and a tool box, kitchen
gadgets, a kitchen carousel, a
cookbook, mums and a stuffed
bear couple.
Food for the occasion included
ham, potato salad, green bean
casserole, hot fruit, pickles, olives
and peppers, and cake.

A luncheon at Mid Pines Resort
in Southern Pines honored Miss
Townsend on February 23.

the weekend in Durham with their
son, Bill Harris, and his family.
Mrs. Marguerite Thomas and

days last wfeek in Chapel Hill.
They celebrated Mrs. McFa
dyen's birthday at the home of

from the hostesses.

Abrams was the setting for a bridal
shower honoring Miss Townsend
on March 2. Co-hostesses were
Mrs. Glen Maxwell, Mrs. Jerry
Jordan, Mrs. Wayne Bundy and
Mrs. Gene Maxwell.
The bride-elect and her mother
were presented wheat weaving cor
sages when they arrived. The coun
try motif of the house was carried
through the decorations. Punch
was served from an old-timey tin
bucket and finger foods were
served from cast iron skillets.

wedding planned
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Paul
Crumpler of Marshville announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Kimberly Jo to James Hinson Nor
wood, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Liddell Norwood Jr., of
Monroe. The wedding is planned
for June 15 at First Presbyterian
Church in Monroe.
Miss Crumpler graduated from
Appalachian State University. She]
is employed by the Anson County
School System.
Mr. Norwood was graduated
from Wingate College and is
employed by Trim-South, Incor
porated, in Monroe.
Miss Crumpler is the grand
daughter of Mrs. Wallace McLean
of Raeford and the late Mr.
McLean.
Guests came between 3 and 3
and their gifts were opened and
displayed on tables covered with
yellow and white gingham cloths.
The hostesses' gift was a food pro
cessor.

honored the bridal couple. Hosts
were Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Win
chester and M*. and Mrs. Charles
Crowder. The party was in the
Winchester home.
Seventeen guests were served
hors d'oeuvres in the den.

sage and the hosts' gift for the cou
ple was a hand pain ted plaque.
