The tests for the two grade levels were totally different so there can be no comparisons drawn between the grades. Sixth graders around the state were asked to choose a place they would like to visit and tell why they would like to go there. Specifically, children were told to: ?Naipe the place you want to visit. ?Give at least two different reason you would like to go there and explain your reasons. ?Write in complete paragraphs. ?Check to be sure you are using good sentences. ?Use correct grammer, spelling, punctuation and capitalization. For the sixth graders, a score of 4 shows a strong command of clarification writing; a 3 shows reasonable command of clarifica tion; a score of 2 shows thai the paper focuses on a place and at tempts to establish reasons for wanting to be then and a L shows there is evidence that the writer has read the prompt and attempted to report to it, the state's report says. Ninth graders were presented with a different problem. They were asked to take a posi tion raguarding whether students should be allowed to buy snacks at school or not. 1 Students' were told to: ?Tell whether you are for or against allowing students to buy snacks at school. ?Oivc a) least two reasons why you are for or against snacks at school. ?Write in complete paragraphs. ?Check to be sure you are writing good sentences. ?Use correct grammar, spelling, capitalization and punctuation. According to the report, a perfect score of 4 is a paper that shows a strong command of point of-view writing; a 3 paper states a position and fives elaborated ' reasons to support the position; a 2 paper states a position and fives reasons to support it and a score of 1 shows that the writer has read the problem and made, an attempt to respond. Semones said that the improved scores this year are due to teacher participation in local, regional and state workshops for learning to help students. . "Then, teachers went back to the students and they wrote - they practiced," said Semones. Unlike last year, teachers have the actual writing sample that students wrote back from the state. With the samples in hand, teachers can show students exactly what they did right or wrong. "If a student scored a 3.5, the - teacher can show him why he did not score a 4 and why he got a 3.5," Semones said. According to the Director of In struction, parents are invited to visit with teachers about their childrens' scores. . . .Depot funds top $6,000 (Continued from page 1A) the corner of Elwood Avenue and Main Street.
