April 2 FRIENDSHIP CLUB - The Raeford Friendship Club will meet on Tuesday, April 2 at the Raeford United Methodist Church. of RiSBhond, Virginia, are be ing shown at St. Andrews' Vardeil Gallery during March. Human figures are the prin cipal subjects in the large scale works, which are done on paper and canvas in oils and mixed drawing media. The ar tist is an assistant professor at the University of Richmond, where she is Gallery Director as well as instructor of drawing and painting. Weinman's ex hibit will be on display thru March 29 and is open to the public. March 28-30 AT PEMBROKE ? The University Theatre will present the musical refresher "El Grande de Coca-Cola," at 8 p.m. on March 28-30 with a 1 p.m. matinee on Friday at the Pembroke State University's Performing Arts Center. April 1-4 HOLY WEEK - The Raeford United Methodist Church will have Holy Week services April 1-4 at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Sid Huggins, Pastor of Hay Street United Methodist Church, Fayetteville, will preach Mon day, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The Rev. Huggins is a dynamic preacher and a great church leader. He was Con ference Evangelist from 1968-1970, and is well qualified in leading people in church revival. He has been pastor in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church for the past 21 years. On Maundy Thursday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. the church will observe the Last Supper ol Jesus Christ with his disciples. April 12-13 IMMORTAL SHOWBOAT ?One of the highlights of Wilmington's 1985 Azalea Festival, April 11-14, will be two special presentations of the world famous Sound and Light Spectacular, "The Immortal Showboat." The sound and light display, which tells the WWII history of the USS North Carolina Battleship, will be shown on Friday and Satur day nights, April 12 aad 13 at 8 p.m. at the Battleship Memorial. la April PRE -SCHOOL REGISTRA TION - Parents of children who will be eligible to attend Kindergarten during the 1985-86 school term are urged to register them during the month of April. This may be done at the schqpl in their at tendance area (Scurlock, McLauchlin, South Hoke, West Hoke). All children who have reached their fifth birth day on or before October 16 are eligible. Parents are re quested to present their child's birth certificate and an up-to date immunization record to the principal of the appropriate school. At that time the parent will be issued a card stating the . dMpj^time, and ptaec of their child's screening session. The Hoke County Health Depart ment, or their family doctor, will assist parents in obtaining immunization records. Registration will be held during the regular school day during April with the exceptiop of the week of April 8-12 when all Hoke County Schools will be closed for Spring vacation. April 3-7 GGO TOURNEY - Burlington Industries will be the major sponsor of the 1985 Greater Greensboro Open (GGO) Golf Tournament, to be held April 3-7. Burlington's involvement includes sponsorship of the Pro-Am event on April 3 and television coverage on ESPN cable network. In addition to the national television coverage, more than 140,000 people attend the tournament in person. The GGO is now in its 48th year. April 7 DEDICATION SERVICE -Special dedication service will be held on Easter Sunday, April 7 dedicating the building at the Living Faith Ministries, Hwy. 211 on Easter Sunday. April 13 STONEYBROOK -- The Stoney brook Steeplechase and Hunt Racing Association this week announced that Coca Cola will sponsor the feature race, the 38th Annual Sandhills Cup, at the Stoneybrook Steeplechase Races in Southern Pines on Saturday, April 13. The race, to be known as the Coca Cola Sandhills Cup and having a purse of $15,000, will be run over National fences at a distance of approximately two and one-quarter miles. April 14 RALEIGH ROAD RACE -The newly-named Sir Walter Raleigh Road Race, for many years Raleigh's premiere road racing event, will be held on Sunday, Apt* 14. ARTISTS - North Carolina artists' submissions for the 1985 Annual Competi tion for N.C. Artists will be ex hibited at the Fayetteville Museum of Art from April 21 to May 19. The gihibit will in clude both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms. The Museum, located behind Eutaw Shopping Center, is open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Admission is free. The system is called "Tele-Tax" and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It offers more than 140 information tapes on subjects including fil ing requirements, itemized deductions, Social Security tax ation, tax credits, typea of in come and adjustments to in come. "Tele-Tax" is available only to owners of push-button telephones, who have a choice of seven numbers to call for taped message*. The number in Fayetteville is 483-0735. These numbers and a listing of tapes by number are included in the tax forms package mailed to in dividuals and in JRS Publica tion 910. Award winners Sixteen Hoke County School System secretaries at tended the annual conference of the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Personnel in Greensboro from March 20-23. On Thursday even ing, eight of eleven recipients received their Profes sional Standard Program award, which is a volunteer program of self-improvement and pro gressive professional growth. Guest speaker for the program was Jeannie Robertson, former Miss North Carolina and well-known motivational speaker. Those receiving awards are: Standard Cer tificate: Deborah Purcell, Lisa Caulder; Associate Certificate: Lois Austin, Linda Shaw; Advanced Associate: Mary James, Marvin Lynne Maxwell, who Is president of the Hoke County NCAEOP and Hester Williams. Don Steed, local schools' finance officer, received special recognition for obtaining his Master's certificate which Is the highest award offered in the program. Katie Gulp, Edna Bratcher, and Shirley Potts will also be receiving their Ad vanced Associate Awards.
