County students attend
NCSU event on Saturday
Two Hoke County residents
were among black high school
students from nine states who have
been accepted to attend North
Carolina State University this fall.
They gathered on the campus last
Saturday for NCSU's annual
Minority Visitation Day.
Warren V. Dukes and Harry L.
Southerland were among about
400 students, parents and friends
who attended the event, sponsored
annually by the NCSU Admissions
Office as part of its effort to at
tract and encourage minority
students to enroll at N.C. State.
This year's event, coordinated
by Sotello Long, assistant admis
sions director, includes talks on
admission and financial aid pro
cedures. Monet Newkirk, a
sophomore who serves as a peer
mentor in an NCSU prbgram
designed to offer support to in
coming minority students, will
speak on that program.
Most events will take place in
Stewart Theatre. These also in
clude a welcome talk by Dr.
Thomas H. Stafford Jr., interim
vice chancellor for student affairs,
an appearance by Sanya Parson,
Miss Pan African 1984, and per
formances by two student groups,
DanceVisions and the New
Horizons Choir.
The day will conclude with visits
by the students to the schools and
departments in which they might
enroll.
Where you place birdseed for
wild birds can be just as important
as what you place in the feeder.
Cardinals, for instance, seem to
prefer a tabletop on which to eat
sunflower seeds in the. shell, while
mourning doves fancy eating
sunflower seeds off the ground.
