Hoke 4-H''er wins state 4-H award Leah Hendrix has been named State 4-H Winner in the Consumer Education Project. She won this award based on her cummulative project book in consumer educa tion. Leah is a member of the Hillcrest 4-H Club and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hendrix of Raeford. Leah has been an active 4-H member for four years. She has served as president of the Hillcrest Club for two years and is presently serving as Presi dent of the Hoke County 4-H Council. Last year Leah planned, prepared and distributed a pam phlet "Be a Smart Shopper" in local grocery stores. She prepared an exhibit on smart shopping tips that was displayed at a District Leader's Meeting and State Leader's Con vention. Leah has prepared and demonstrated a consumer educa tion file to various clubs in the county. She has written many news articles and radio spots on "Stretching Food Dollars" and "Consumer Education Tips." She has served on several com mittees helping to plan activities for the county. Some of these are: Fashion Revue, Leader's Banquet, Heart Fund, Family Fun Day, and National 4-H Week. During her summer vacation, Leah works as a volunteer at the Hoke Children's Center. She recently received the award "Youth of the Year" in her local church and sub-district. Leah is among 40 North Carolina 4-H members who are be ing rewarded for project achieve ment this year. Later in the summer, her project book will be submitted for Na Leah Hendrix tional competition with the possibility of an all-expense paid trip to National 4-H Congress in Chicago. National winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Lowery receives California duty Army Spec. 4' Nathaniel Lowery, son of Edward L. Lowery of Rural Route 8, Sumter, South Carolina, has arrived for duty at Oakland Army Base, California. Lowery, a traffic management coordinator with the Military Traf fic Management Command Western Area, was previously assigned in Sinop, Turkey. His wife, Lora, is the daughter of David S. and Beatrice Carthens of Raeford. He is a 1975 graduate of Hill Crest High School, Dazell, South Carolina.
