Energy efficiency essential for new appliance purchases If you are remodeling your kit chen, or just need to replace a kit chen appliance, you may want to consider choosing an energy effi cient appliance. Major kitchen appliances ac count for roughly 15ft of your home's total energy use. Aa Energy Shopping Guide - While energy-conserving features on appliances may increase the in itial cost, long-term savings usually make the extra investment worth while. The Federal Trade Commis sion's "Energy Guide" labels on appliances estimate operating costs On the Front Burner! Alice Pettitt Home Economics Agent and will help you compare the effi ciency of similarly sized models. The following figures on energy use and savings are averages; your amounts may vary depending upon use, upkeep, and local utility rates. Refrigerator/Freezer - Match the size of a new refrigerator or freezer to your needs. Eight cubic feet of refrigerator space is recom mended for two people; add a cubic foot for each additional family member, and 2 extra cubic feet if you entertain frequently. Two cubic feet per person is the suggested figure for a freezer com partment, 6 cubic feet for a separate freezer. To save up to 164% on refrigeration energy costs, look for a power-saver or humid dry switch that enables you to turn off the anti-sweat heaters (used to (See FRONT, page 5B) Gardening should be recorded What varieties of pansies or tomatoes did you plant last year? When did your peonies start blooming? How often did you have to water your summer vegetable garden? What fertilizer did you use on your azaleas? If you have trouble remember ing the details of last year's garden and your gardening activities, con sider keeping a garden journal or diary. It could help you become a better gardener. A garden journal can be a record of what is happening in your garden - what's blooming, onset of insect attacks, what and when you plant, crop failures and outstanding successes. In your journal you can record the dates and first blossoms of a plant in your garden opened and the duration of the plant's bloom ing period. This can help you plan your garden for continuous flowering. Did frost nip your tomato transplants? Maybe you will want to record this so that you can remember to set out next year's Extension News Willie Featherstone Jr } County Extension Chairman i plants later in the season and see if you have better results. A garden journal can be more descriptive and detailed. In it you can answer such questions as, does the new corn variety taste as good as the one you planted last year? Are the petunia colors as vibrant as the catalogue described? What birds visit your garden? Which flowers attract the most but terflies? Include the data you feel will be useful later. Did that cantaloupe really weigh 10 pounds or has it grown in your mind over the winter? Weighing garden prizes and recording the results will keep the facts straight. Not all information has to be useful. You may want to record things you will find interesting later, such as the name of the per son who shared some iris rhizomes with you, or your garden club's reaction to your arrangement of wildflowers at the club's monthly meeting. A picture is worth a thousand words. Photographs will help you remember your garden as it actual ly was. Children will proudly pose with a sample harvest from the vegetable garden, or beside the zin nia and marigold bed, especially if they got to lend a hand in helping plant, tend or water. Photographs of trees and shrubs around your home will be helpful for insurance purposes if they are damaged by lightning or some other casualty. Perhaps the most important benefit derived from keeping a garden journal is that keeping a journal can make you a better gardener as you become a keener observer and more aware of what is happening in your garden.
