1985-86 school term are urged
to register them during the
month of April. This may be
done at the school in their at
tendance area (Scurlock,
McLauchlin, South Hoke,
West Hoke). All children who
have reached their fifth birth
day on or before October 16
are eligible. Parents are re
quested to present their child's
birth certificate and an up-to
date immunization record to
the principal of the appropriate
school. At that time the parent
will be issued a card stating the
date, time, and place of their
child's screening session. The
Hoke County Health Depart
ment, or their family doctor,
will assist parents in obtaining
immunization records.
Registration will be held during
the regular school day during
April with the exception of the
week of April 8-12 when all
Hoke County Schools will be
closed for Spring vacation.

Stoneybrook on Saturday
The $15,000 Coca-Cola Sand
hills Cup, the fourth race, features
the 38th renewal of the
Stoneybrook Steeplechase Races at
Southern Pines, on Saturday,
April 13. The post time for the first
race is 2 p.m.
Arcadia Stable's Real Pip came
from behind to win the 1984 edi
tion of the Sandhills Cup which
over the years has produced some
of the finest competitiors on the
steeplechase circuit.
William S. Farish's Thrice Wor
thy captured the Cup in 1982 and
Arthur O. Choate Jr.'s Turtle
Head emerged victorious in 1983.
One of the pre-race favorites is
Eremite, owned by Robert and
Mary Entenmann of Big E Farm in
Powerhead, N.Y., the winner of
the 1985 edition of the Carolina
Cup held on March 30 at Camden,
South Carolina.
Mr. and Mrs. Michael G. Walsh
Sr., are hosts once again as they
have been for 37 years, at their col
orful farm off Youngs Road.
The Stoneybrook race course
has been rated among the finest
steeplechase facilities in America.
"The training track and hurdle
course at Stoneybrook Farm are
comparable to the finest on any
private estate in the country,"
commented Ned Welch in "Who's
Who in Thoroughbred Racing."
There are some 13 fences on the
hurdle course, each measuring ap
proximately 4 feet, 2 inches in
height.
The opening race about two
miles over fences for 3-year-old
maidens upward is the Billie Calais
Memorial and the 7-furlong on the
turf will be run for maidens three
years old and upward in the second
race.
The Stoneybrook, an optional
claiming event, is carded for about
two miles over fences in the third
year race and the fifth race of the
day is the Tanglewood, also on the
flat, is for threeTyear-olds. Judging
for the annual Hat Contest will
take place at the Judge's Stand
after the first race.
