Spring beautification
Upchurch Jr. High School parents, teachers and
students spent a hard Saturday landscaping the
campus on March 30. The workers planted 40
plants donated by the Girl Scouts and landscaped
other areas. Here assistant Principal Linwood
Huffman (left) assists another worker with hole dig
ging during the beautiflcation activities, while
students bring additional landscaping timbers.
Alumni slated to meet Saturday
Saturday, April 13, 1985 will be
a joyous occasion when the Alum
ni of Flora Macdonald College and
Vardell Hall gather together for
their annual Alumni meeting.
Registration will be from 10:00
a.m. until 1 1 :00 a.m. during a cof
fee hour. At the conclusion of a
business meeting, a delicious cov
ered dish luncheon will be served in
the dining hall of the college.
Of special interest is the fact that
the class of 1935 will be holding its
50th reunion this year, a celebra
tion in itself.
Flora Macdonald College was
founded in 1896 by the multi
talented Rev. C.G. Vardell, a
much beloved minister, educator
and gentleman.
The school was located in Red
Springs, a town in Robeson
County.
Dr. Vardell had only $4,000 in
cash and materials to be used to
erect the building and provide
operating capital.
Leaving the New Bern
Presbyterian Church which he
served as pastor, Dr. Vardell
became the president of Flora
Macdonald College.
Today, we see Flora Macdonald
College, a National Historical site,
still standing proudly and firmly,
having been renovated and
restored following the damage
done by the tornado of last year.
