To perform in gala Boris L. Willis has been chosen during recent audi tions as a member of the Per forming Company of the Dance Theatre of Fayet te ville and will perform in the Spring Gala scheduled for the Dogwood Festival April 25 and 26 in Fayettr'ille. Boris, who lives in Raeford, is a student at Hoke High School, and has studied dance for the past two years. The program will be the 1985 Dance Theatre production during the Dogwood Festival, April 25 and 26 at Reeves Auditorium, Meth odist College. This perfor mance combines the tradi tional with the popular, jazz with lyrical and modern dance. The program will in clude "City Heat", "The Ugly One", "Kitra's Wed ding", " Three Faces", and "The Waltz". Baldwin chosen as specialist Air Force Staff Sgt. Wayne Baldwin, son of Lucille Arnold of Holmes Court, Raeford, has been chosen logistics specialist of the year for the 2112th Information Systems Squadron. Baldwin was selected in competi tion among contemporaries for ex emplary duty performance and military professionalism. Selection was based on job knowledge, leadership abilities and management of resources. Also considered were military standards of dress, appearance and conduct, self-improvement in furthering education, and involvement in community programs. He is an inventory management supervisor at RAF Chicksands, England. The sergeant is a 1977 graduate of Hoke County High School. McLean promoted John H. McLean Jr., a 1980 graduate of Red Springs High School, has been promoted in the U.S. Army to the rank of specialist four. Local student wins scholarship award Two members of the Methodist College Zcta Mu chapter of Alpha Xi Delta, Joyce Elliott, who is the daughter of Jack and Peggy Elliott of McCain, and Lisa Bradshaw of Clinton, recently attended the Ep silon Province Convention in Nor folk, Virginia. The students were accompanied on their trip by four alumnae, in cluding Rachelle McCallum, a Methodist graduate who served as the local alumnae chapter delegate, and Elaine Porter, Methodist Col lege faculty member and advisor to the Zeta Mu chapter. The six Alpha Xi Delta members returned to the Methodist campus with five awards, winning more recognition than any other school included in the Epsilon Province: East Carolina, Western Carolina, NC State, Old Dominion, Newberry and UNC-A. Elliott received a merit scholar ship from the Northern Virginia alumnae chapter and Porter was recognized as "Outstanding Chapter Director." The Zeta Mu Chapter, cited lor best scholarship improvement in 1983-84, also won the "Best Scrap book Award." New Postmaster Jim Curtis presents Mrs. Jean Thompson her commission from the U.S. Postmaster General as he installed her as Postmaster of Park ton Thurday afternoon in Parkton. New Parkton postmaster takes over reins Thurs . As local postal patrons, town of ficials and visiting postal officials looked on, Mrs. Jean J. Thomp son, of Lumber Bridge, took the oath of office and was installed as the Postmaster of the ParKton Post Office by Jim Curtis, Manager of the Fayetteville Sec tional Center, which comprises the 145 post offices in this Southeastern North Carolina sec tion. Curtis then presented to Mrs. Thompson her commission, signed by the Potmaster General of the United States, commended her on the record she has established in her years of service in the postal service, and assured those in atten dance of her competence and her eagerness to fulfill every need and desire of all postal patrons. Mrs. Thompson responded with brief remarks expressing her delight in being appointed to this position, and inviting all postal patrons to express to her any com plaints or needs that they may have, assuring them that she will do anything in her power to com ply with their requests. Light refreshments were served to those in attendance. Among the distinguished guests recognized were Horace W. Parnell, Mayor of Parkton; Postmasters Bill Monroe, Red Springs; Nearis Harvey, Saint Pauls; and Mollie Dunn, Lumber Bridge; other postal officials: Joe Edwards and Berline Riley, Hope Mills; H.L. Wiggins, Saint Pauls; and Margaret Thaggard, Raeford. A native of Parkton, the new Postmaste is the wife of M.H. Thompson, Jr., of Lumber Bridge, and a graduate of Parkton High School. For many years, she has served as clerk in the Parkton Post office and as assistant to the now-retired former Postmaster, Mrs. Rose M. Hoke pupils take on MATHCOUNTS Over 130 seventh and eighth grade students from across the state will compete in the state finals of the national MATH COUNTS porgram on Saturday, April 20 at Athens Drive High School in Raleigh. Hoke County will be represented Saturday by six Upchurch students who have been coached by Donna Kennedy. On the county team are: Kendra Dockery, Robert Locklear, Donna Brock, Alex Games, Jennifer Brock and Kim Colston. The students have advanced from nine chapter competitions which were held in February and March. The program consists of written tests and a fast-paced oral cipher ing match. Topics for the contests include statistics, linear algebra and polynomials. A special topic for this year is probability. Both team and individual prizes will be awarded. The four top-scoring individuals will form the North Carolina team and travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national MATHCOUNTS finals on May 18. The public is invited to see the ciphering match and awards ceremony in the school auditorium at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. respec tively.
