Classified Ads Turlington salutes volunteers Lunchtime on Tuesdays is rest time for homeroom teachers at Tur lington School. Ken Witherspoon, Director of the Department of Social Services, and a Team from the National Guard Armory volunteer to supervise Turlington 's students during their hutch period every Tuesday. Guardsmen Include SSgt. David Butler, (standing, right), Sgt. Gary Wietand, (standing, left), who Is a recruiter for the Hoke County area, Sgt. White and others. Lunchtime on Tuesdays is the only time teachers have a chance to get together at Turlington to enjoy adult conversation. On other days, teachers eat at the same table with their students. Teachers without homerooms give up their lunch period on Tuesdays also. Included in that group but not pictured are, Liz White, Gloria Butler and Faye Best. Local Guard unit part of NC drill The North Carolina National Guard will undergo a test in early May when most of the state's 13,000 Guardsmen, including those from Hoke County, will par ticipate in a statewide mobilization training exercise. "Hickory Response 85" on May 3-5 is the first statewide exercise of its kind in North Carolina Guard history. Military convoys will move Ar my guardsmen to Fort Bragg on Friday, May 3 for the three-day ex ercise. They will undergo process ing for overseas replacement con ducted by active duty personnel at ^ Fort Bragg. Air guardsmen will move to the main Air Guard Base at Charlotte's Douglas International Airport for combat loading on C-130 aircraft. Governor James G. Martin will be among the officials observing the National Guard in action. Governor Martin will visit Fort Bragg on Saturday, May 4 to observe guardsmen being process ed for overseas replacement. The 80th Division Maneuver Training Command, an Army Reserve unit headquartered in Richmond, Virginia will evaluate and critique the exercise. The exercise has been in the planning stages since mid-1984. It is believed to be the largest peacetime mobilization of reserve forces ever staged in the nation. Major General Hubert M. ? This recognition, coupled with the latest equipment provided our state, including the M-l Abrams Main Battle Tank and the recently announced Apache Attack Helicopter, is further illustration of the high regard the Defense Department has for the ability and high degree of readiness of the state's National Guard."
