Sports Bucks set records Last week was ?? one for the books, literally, for the Hoke County High School Track Team. Not only did the team win its first track meet in four years, but several school records were broken and two team members placed highly in a meet that included some of the best atheletes in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Last week, the team travelled to Charlotte to participate in the Queen City Relay, the oldest track meet of its sort in the Carolines, according to Coach Howard Barkley. About 40 schools participated in the 30-year-old meet. Hoke fast man Tarrell Carpenter, who is ranked number one in the nation in the event, won the 100 meter dash with a meet record time of 10.33 seconds. They ran the 400 meters in 43.1 seconds while kicking out 800 meters in 1 minute, 30.2 seconds. At the end of that meet, Carpenter was honored as the outstanding male participant, Barkley said. Last Thursday, the team won In a meet with Westover High School, E.E. Smith, Lee County and St. Pauls. The team had 79 points while the next closest team, Westover, had 63. Marco Picket broke a 10-year old school record in the high jump. Over the bar he sailed at 6 feet, 3 inches, bettering the record mark by an inch. The 400 meter relay team, made up of Greg Thompson, Baker, Allbrooks and Carpenter, bettered an old school mark by about five tenths of a second. The new mark was set at 43.16 seconds from 43.6 seconds, Barkley said. Carpenter, as fast on his feet as ever, won the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes and the long jump.
