Letters To The Editor Trade Act needs summit To the editor: Over the past several months we've been talking with you and other leaders in the community, with media and others about the need for legislation to help moderate the flood of textile and apparel imports that is destroying American jobs. Legislation is now before the Congress. It's called the "Textile & Apparel Trade Enforcement Act of 1985." Its purpose is basically to help achieve the objectives of the international Multi-Fiber Ar rangement (MFA) that has been in place for some time, but which in recent years has not been strictly followed. The Act would ensure orderly and non-disruptive growth of im ports of fiber, textiles and apparel; it would set limits on imports from the major exporting countries at levels which would have existed if MFA import growth rates since 1980 had been enforced; it would allow smaller exporting countries more freedom to gain a share of the U.S. market; and it would set future growth rates. We believe this is reasonable legislation, but the "free trade" climate in Washington suggests that it has tough sledding ahead. Congressman Hefner and Senators Helms and East are already on record in support of the bill, but they need encouragement from you and others in com munities where the import problem is evidenced by lost jobs. Please wire, call or write all three of them to let them know that you are behind them in this ef fort, and urge them to seek sup port from other members of Con gress. For your convenience, their ad dresses are: The Honorable Jesse Helms U.S. Senate Washington, DC 20510 The Honorable John P. East U.S. Senate Washington, DC 20SI0 The Honorable W.G. "Bill" Hefner U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 (In the House, the bill is iden tified as HR1562 and in the Senate as S680). This group, sponsored by Raeford Junior Woman's Club, is designed to give high school girls a chance to participate in worthwhile community projects and lend a hand in bettering their community. This year, the club, led by presi dent Kim Tuttle, has proven itself to be a truly dedicated, civic oriented organization. 1 congratulate Miss Tuttle, all of her young workers and their direc tors, Mrs. Gwen Booker and Mrs. Beverly Pasternak for a year of fine work. Sonya A. Falls President Raeford Junior Woman's Club We're taxed because we don't make money To the editor: I think I've found out why 40 million or so of us have to pay an income tax. It's because we don't make enough money. You see, if you want to avoid paying an income tax, get up in the billion-dollar-a-year bracket. The article explained that those 128 tax-dodging corporations didn't violate any law or cheat on their income taxes. They simply took advantage of the tax loopholes. Congress is working on those loopholes. The big loophole users are working on Congress. I look for a tie. ,, Yours faithfully, J. A.
