Winning teams
On Saturday, April 20, Carowinds was taken by
storm by the Upchurch Junior High School Chorus
(above) and Eighth Grade band (below). Both
groups captured superior ratings in their areas mak
ing Upchurch the only school in the history of the
Carowinds festival to obtain superior ratings at
both the band and" choral events. The 84-voice
chorus performed " America the Beautiful " and
" Ride the Chariot " as their contest selections and
received superior ratings from each of the three
judges. The judges also gave the group high scores
on each of the caption ratings to earn them the first
superior rating given at the Choral Festival. Perfor
ming in Group 11 of level difficulty, the 105
member Upchurch Eighth Grade Band played
" Black Knight March " by John Menz, "King Ar~
thur's Processional" by Henry Purcell, and
" Theme from Symphony No. 1" by Johannes
Brahms. The band also captured superior ratings
from all three judges and received superior ratings
in all captions. They were also the first band to earn
a superior rating at the festival. The Upchurch
Chorus is under the direction of Ellen Heidenreich
and the Upchurch Bands are under the direction of
Gil Clark.
