. . . Around Town continued (Continued from page 1A) - bi e (Governor James G. Martin. It is very rare that a governor speaks at a chamber meeting, but with the effort of Rep. Danny DeVane and the governor's schedule for the day, we were able to be honored by his presence. '"Most of us don't realize the heavy schedule that an elected of ficial like the governor has for a day. The day that he will be in Racford, he will have been at Flora Macdonald historic site. Red Springs, at a donation ceremony at the Red Springs Fire Department, a ^ reception at Pembroke State University and then on to speak at the chamber meeting. New directors and officers will be installed Friday night so make plans now to be present. * * * Last Friday night Mary Alice and I, along with Pearl and Harvey Warlick were eating at a local . restaurant. Mrs. W.A. Covell, nee ; Bonnie Kate Blue, came in with ;Mrs. J.H. Blue and her son, J.H. ; Blue Jr. Bonnie Kate came over to ;the table and we exchanged ; greetings and recalled old times for | a few minutes. She now lives in Pensacola, Fla. and was in North Carolina with her daughter who was to be in a wedding of a friend last weekend. Monday afternoon, Warren Johnston showed me a copy of a check that Bonnie Kate had given to the depot restoration fund. We think that this very generous dona tion shows the love for Raeford and Hoke County by a native. Of course her family would be con sidered one of the first families of Hoke County and Raeford. Her kin built the A&R Railroad. Thanks Bonnie Kate, if there are other natives of the county who would like to contribute to this worthy cause, send me the money and 1 will acknowledge the dona tion in this column. Make the check payable to the Hoke Depot Restoration Fund. ? ? ? The basketball game between the Hoke Strutters and members of the North Carolina Legislature has been postponed until May 22. ? ? ? The Turkey Pickin', to benefit the 1st Annual N.C. Turkey Festival will be held Thursday, May 30 at the National Guard Ar mory. The time is from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets for this event are $4. The depot raffle for the John Deere lawn mower will be held at this event. If you haven't purchas ed a ticket, someone will be glad to accommodate you. Call the chamber office and they will be sure you get a ticket. It was both good and bad news to hear that Jack Burgess was go ing to be Headmaster of Flora Macdonald Academy next year. Hoke County Schools has lost a good school man, which is bad news, but the Academy has become wealthy in talent in hiring Jack, which is good news. We wish him the best in his new job and know that he will continue to be the same man of character that has endeared him to so many in Raeford and Hoke County. Also, we hate to see W.K. Morgan leave Red Springs for Albemarle, but as the saying goes, "You can't keep a good man down!" l!
