If I get him neutered, will he calm down? He is a little over one year old. ANSWER: Neutering a male will not cause a change in his basic personality. If he is aggressive and tends to roam away from home, neutering will help; but it will not make a calm, docile pet out of one that is brimming over with energy. Time and maturity will be more likely to calm your pet than will surgery. Be certain that you are not causing unwanted excitement by your behavior toward the dog. When you greet him when arriving home, do you act excited to see him and rough him up? Or do you greet him with a calm verbal greeting and then go about your business? Your pet will get clues about how to act by the way you behave toward him. DEAR DOCTOR: We have an Irish Setter who insists upon sleep ing on the sofa. We've tried everything, but nothing seems to help. We even put up boxes on the You And Your Pet sofa but he pushes them off. Help! ANSWER: So much of the behavior our pets exhibit starts when they are puppies. The time to set rules of behavior for pets is when you first get them. Stopping unwanted behavior in the older pet is more difficult than stopping the behavior in a puppy. If you scold the pet when you catch him on the sofa, it will help. But, more likely it will train him to jump off the sofa when you ap pear. To stop him from getting on the sofa, try putting mouse traps on the sofa. Set them so they are ready to snap shut and then cover him with a single thickness of newspaper. When he jumps on the sofa he will get a harmless surprise. Don't expect one experience to solve the problem; keep after him. DEAR DOCTOR: How often should 1 groom my cat? ANSWER: You should groom your cat's coat as often as needed to prevent the hair from matting or tangling. Short-haired cats groom themselves well and rarely need to be combed or brushed unless they become soiled or have fleas. If they have fleas, use a flea powder or spray and continue frequent grooming. Long-haired cats often must be groomed every day to prevent the hair from becoming completely matted. Each spring, veterinarians see cats that must be anesthetized and shaved to remove mats. Ac custom your cat to frequent grooming so that it doesn't resist when grooming is needed. It is far easier to prevent mats and tangles with frequent grooming than to remove them. Editor's Note: This column is provided as a public service by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. If you have a question about your pet's health, send it to Ralph H. Lee, Executive Director, NCVMA, P.O. Box, Kinston, N.C. 28301. LD help distant, Carolina Tel. warns Although cost-cutting competi tion among long-distance telephone companies is gradually coming to Eastern Carolina, customers need not for a long time expect "equal access," says G.T. Pate, director of corporate com -fnunications with Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Com pany. With equal access, customers of competing long-distance com panies can dial the same number of digits to make long-distance calls. To further long-distance com petition, the Federal Communica tions Commission (FCC) has man dated that Bell companies which were part of the pre-divestiture Bell System make equal access available to competitors of their former parent company, AT&T, by September, 1986. Without equal access, customers of AT&T competitors must dial several digits more to make long distance calls than do AT&T customers. Pate said, "The FCC order did not apply to local telephone com panies that were not part of the former Bell System; however, Carolina Telephone could make equal access available to the local network in many of our locations for AT&T competitors if it were requested of us. "It is unlikely that the request will be made since long-distance companies are now fighting for market share in larger cities, and are not interested in lesser populated areas. "Presently, long-distance com petition in Carolina Telephone's service area is occurring in and around our larger population areas -- Fayetteville, Rocky Mount, Kernersville, Gibsonville, and the communities around Raleigh such as Wake Forest, Clayton, Angier and Fuquay-Varina. "Equal access has not been re quested by any of the long-distance companies in any of these areas. "Equal access is a market-driven feature. When the long-distance carriers in these areas want it, we'll be able to provide it." Thelma A Luther Wade, 1 Lot Annie N. Walker, Heirs, 1 Lot George T. Walker, 1 Lot James & Dorothy Walker, 1 Lot ?
