Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Lee Avery, Jr. Raeford UDC celebrates Confederate Memorial Day The Raeford Chapter of the United States of the Confederacy met on May 10 to celebrate Con federate Memorial Day. The group met in the Edinborough Restaurant. The Nominating Committee, chaired by Mrs. Marianna McLean, presented a slate of of ficers who will serve for the next two years. They are: Miss Isabel McFadyen, President; Mrs. Marie Lee, Vice-President; Mrs. Treva Koonce, Secretary; Mrs. Aline Wright, Treasurer; Mrs. Sadie McLean, Chaplain; Mrs. Eliza Bullard, Register; Mrs. Lillian Wood, Historian; and Mrs Ruby Penney, Recorder of Crosses. In other business, Miss Isabel McFadyen reported on the District V meeting held recently in Lumberton. The Raeford Chapter received a superior rating for its work. An announcement was made of the Open House to be held at the U.D.C. Headquarters in Raleigh on Saturday, May 18 at 11:00. A dessert course and iced tea was served during the social hour. The Rev. Alton Burros ? conducted the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Hinson. A graduate of Hoke High, she is employed by Faberge of Raeford. The groom is employed by Campbell Soup Company of Max ton. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Lee Avery of Clinton. He graduated from Clinton High School. A Victorian setting had been created on the lakeside for the wedding. Pink and blue hydrangeas and large Boston ferns 3 were used. An altar area had two 1 large wedding baskets with ar rangements of larkspur, dusty rose gladiolas, alstroemeria, and carna I tions and blue delphinium. The I bride's register was in an area with white rattan furniture, ferns and hydrangeas. Kathy Barker provided music for the ceremony. "There is Love" and "O Perfect Love" were among the selections. The couple arrived at the setting in a horse drawn surrey with fringe on top. It was decorated with garlands of lilac and gypsophila. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a Victorian gown of satin and lace. Schiffli em broidery enhanced the bodice and the train. She wore a hat with a chapel veil and blusher. Diane Hinson of Raeford was made of honor: Jo West of Dunn was matron of honor.. They wore tea length dresses of daphne rose organdy with Victorian necklines. They wore matching ribbon and gypsophila in their hair. The bridesmaids carried lace umbrellas with arrangements of white and dusty rose roses, laven dar larkspur and gypsophila. Bridesmaids were Catherine Avery of Clinton, Brenda Kellis of Raeford, Marie Autry of Dunn, Carol Butler of Shannon, Myra Jones of Charlotte, Sharon Harden and Pam Carter of Raeford. Their dresses were cloudy lavendar and like those of the honor attendants. Best man was Johnny Avery, brother of the groom. Ushers were Bobby Lowery of Lumber Bridge, Danny West of Dunn, Willie Jacobs, Brian Hinson, Harold Kellis, and Ronnie Haynes of Raeford, Raymond Rodriquez and Larry Autry of Fayetteville. The men wore Journee cut-away coats in gray pinstripes with double breasted vests, wing collar shirts and ascots. Miss Mandie Taylor was flower girl. She carried an open lace parasol. Daniel West, ring bearer, carried a Bible. The mother of the bride and the mother of the groom wore silk cor Woodmen hold workshop An Officers' Workshop for Woodmen of the World was held at King's Restaurant in Kinston, on Saturday, May 4. Mary Ruth Haire, President and a National Delegate, Ruth Wilkerson, Vice President, and Evelyn Ashburn, Secretary and member of the State Fraternal Committee, represented Lodge 6178 of Raeford. National Delegates Mary Ruth Haire and Herbert Pate gave infor _ .mative talks on how to increase at tendance at meetings. The. leaders of individual workshops were Harvey Bedsole, National Director and East N.C. State Manager; Earl Hughes, East N.C. Fraternal Coordinator; and Jerry Lennon, one of East North Carolina's Area Managers. A fried chicken and pork barbecue dinner was served to the approximately 300 officers atten ding. On Monday, May 6, Mary Ruth Haire and Peggy Calloway attend ed Awards Night of W.O.W. Lodge 18, Laurinburg. sages of white roses. Grand mothers wore blush pink silk roses. The mother of the bride wore an appliqued gray chiffon dress with a jacket. The groom's mother wore a plum dress accented with a belt. The bride carried a cascading bouquet of white roses, lavendarl larkspur, and pink azealas. As she departed, she carried a parasol. RECEPTION A reception followed at the Hoke Civic Center. It was hosted by the bride's parents. An arrangement of dusty pink carnations, blue delphinium and wax flowers centered the table. A fountain was used for t|)e punch. | Ham sandwiches, lady fingers, chocolate mints, chicken salad tarts, and cucumber sandwiches were served. The wedding cake was four tiers with two smaller cake* connected by staircases with miniature bridesmaids and ushers. On top of the cake were miniature bride and groom. The bride on the cake car ried a lace parasol like the newj Mrs. Avery. After a wedding trip to Wrightsville Beach, the Averys will live on Route 5, Raeford.
