Matthews. The Rev. Dr. John
Todd and the Rev. Gary Hudson,
. cousin of the bride, officiated.
There were candelabra and ferns
on either side of the altar. A mixed
arrangement of pastel colors was
on the altar. ?
James Creech, organist, and
Beth Wagoner, soloist, provided
the wedding music. The prelude in
k eluded selections by C.M. Widor
' and J.S. Bach. "Whither Thou
Goest, I Will Go" and "Oh, 1
Want to Know You More" were
sung.
The bride, escorted by Douglas
Anthony Blackman, wore a white
satin gown with a sweetheart
neckline, a fitted bodice, and'
short, full sleeves.
The bodice and sleeves were
trimmed with Alencon lace and
) seed pearls. Her lace trimmed veil
was attached to a cap of lace and
seed pearls. She carried a nosegay
of white silk roses and babies'
breath.
Maid of honor was Cynthia
Blackman of Raleigh; matron of
honor was Mrs. Cameron Smith of
Asheboro. They wore colonial rose
satin gowns and carried bouquets
of white and pink silk flowers with
) babies' breath and lace streamers.
The bridesmaids were dressed
like the honor attendants. They
were: Sharon Stone, Laurence
Williford, Joan Nunnery, and
Beth Wood of Fayetteville, Anne
Fonville of Louisville, Kentucky,
Lynne Matthews of Greenville,
Joy Blackman of Charleston,
S.C., and Beth Blackman of
Raleigh.
Mr. Hersey Rolland Matthews
of Fayetteville was best man.
Ushers were Jerry Shaw, Larry
Strother, Hunter Willis, Jack
Pridgen, David Williford, David
Hankins, and David Adams of
Fayetteville, Dexter Matthews of
Greenville, Michael Blackman of
Charleston, S.C. and Cameron
Smith of Asheboro. The men wore
light grey tuxedos and white buon
tonniers.
Misses Michelle Matthews and
Carrie Blackman were flower girls.
A reception followed the
ceremony. It was held in the Mac
Pherson Presbyterian Chruch
Fellowship Hall.
After a trip to Kiawah Island,
the couple will live in Fayetteville.
The bride, a graduate of San
ford Central High School and
Meredith College, is employed by
the Hoke County School System.
She is the daughter of Mrs.
Douglas Blackman and Mr.
Douglas Blackman, both of San
ford.
The groom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Hersey Rolland Matthews of
Fayetteville. He graduated from
Terry Sanford High School and at
tended Elon and Methodist Col
lege. He is employed by Century
21 -Pacesetter.
REHEARSAL DINNER
On the evening before the wed
ding, the parents of the groom
hosted a rehearsal dinner at
Highland Country Club.

Matthews - Hales marry
Miss Donna Sue Hales was mar
ried to Ronald Lee Matthews Jr.
on April 27 in the Raeford United
Methodist Church. The Rev. Ar
thur Winstead officiated at the 3
p.m. service.
The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Donald Hales of
Raeford. She is a graduate of
Hoke County High School and at
tended Louisburg College of
Louisburg, N.C. She is to be
employed by the Christmas Shop
in Manteo.
The groom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ronald Matthews Sr. of
Elizabeth City, formerly of
Raeford. Mr. Matthews graduated
from Southern Wayne High
School and Pembroke State
University. He will receive his
Masters Degree in Public Ad
ministration in August of this year.
He is employed by the Town of
Nags Head as Assistant City
Manager.
Pink and lilac rosebuds were
used in arrangements for the altar
and the narthex of the church.
Pairs of sixteen-branch and twelve
branch candelabra, a kneeling
bench, and a unity candle were
used with greenery in the sanc
tuary. The family pews were mark
ed with white satin bows.
Mrs. Stephen McNeill was
organist. Gil Clark accompanied
the organ with his trumpet for the
Processional hymn. Mrs. Kenneth
Barnes, soloist, sang "God, a
Woman, and a Man," "That's the
Way," and the Lord's Prayer."
The bride, escorted by her
father, Donald Hales, wore a
cathedral-length satin gown. It
featured a Queen Anne neckline, a
fitted bodice of Chantilly lace and
pearls, and long sleeves with lace
inserts. The full skirt Ifiad a peak of
Chantilly lace in front which
spread to encircle the scalloped
train. The veil was trimmed with
lace and fell from a mantilla-styled
cap.
The bride wore a string of pearls
and matching earrings given to her
by the groom at the rehearsal din
ner. She carried a white lace hand
kerchief, a gift from her mother.
Her flowers were a cascade of
miniature carnations, stephanotis,
babies' breath, and pink and lilac
roses.
Matron of honor was Mrs. Tam
mie Ellis of Raeford. She wore a
daphne rose gown of taffeta with
fitted bodice, spaghetti straps, a
double flounce neckline, and a
wide tie sash. She carried an arm
bouquet of long-stemmed lilac
roses, fern and babies breath. ?
Bridesmaids were April Mat
thews of Elizabeth City, sister of
the groom. Sue Ellen Weese of
Fayetteville, Kathey Lee and
Teresa Williams of Raeford. They
were dressed in lilac gowns like
that of the honor attendant. They
carried arm bouquets of pink
roses.
Ron Matthews of Elizabeth Ci
ty, father of the groom, was best
man. Ushers were Ashley Hales
and Wesley Hales, brothers of the
bride, Steve Matthews of Carboro,
brother of the groom, and Trey
Brock of Raeford. The men in the
wedding wore silver grey tailcoats.
The groom wore a lilac rose
boutOnniere, his groomsmen wore
pink roses.
Miss Janet Davis of Raeford
served as train carrier, Miss Jen
nifer Barrington of Aberdeen was
flower girl, and Master Brad Hales
of Winston-Salem was ring bearer.
The little girls wore pink dresses
and babies' breath in their hair.
The young man was dressed in a
miniature version of the
groomsmen's clothing.
The parents of the bride enter
tained with a reception following
the ceremony. Refreshments
featured a four-tier wedding cake,
a gift of Mrs. Nancy Davis. It was
decorated with pink roses and
Mrs. Ronald Lee Matthews Jr.
white borders. The scalloped tiers
were topped by white doves, lace,
ribbon, and wedding rings.
Assisting with the reception were
Judy Barrington and Pat Eaton of
Aberdeen, aunts of the bride,
Shirley Hedrick of Winston
Salem, aunt of the groom, and
Martie Jackson of Raeford. Mr.
and Mrs. Leonard Ellis said good
byes.
REHEARSAL DINNER
On April 26, the parents of the
groom entertained the wedding
party and out of town guests at a
rehearsal dinner in the Edin
borough Restaurant in Raeford.
Special guests at the dinner were
the groom's grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. J.G. Hedrichs of
Winston-Salem, and the bride's
grandmother, Mrs. Lois Collins of
Raeford .
After a wedding trip to the
North Carolina mountains, the
Matthews will live in Manteo,
N.C.

Larry Hales of Winston-Salem,

Woman's Club honors Mrs. Frances McLean
Mrs. Frances McLean was
honored on Thursday when the
Woman's Club of Raeford met.
Mrs. McLean has been a member
of the club since 1928. She has
served the club in many ways, most
recently as Historian. She is mov
ing to High Point later this month.
A signed Art Gore print was
presented to Mrs. McLean by Mrs.
Kay Thomas. Mrs. Thomas spoke
of her own joy in knowing and
working with Mrs. McLean. Mrs.
McLean thanked the club and told
the members that she has many
lovely memories of the club. She
said she has the longest member
ship of any club member, and the
club has a very dear place in her
heart.
The club business also included
the selection of Clubwoman of the
Year. Mrs. Kay Thomas received
this honor. The 1985-1986 Club
Yearbook will be dedicated to her.
The meeting was a Spring Ban
quet, catered by Cross Creek
Caterers, in the Raeford
Presbyterian Church Fellowship
Hall. President Brenda Edwards
presided.
Tom Phillips, City Manager,
was introduced by Mrs. Anne
Hostetler. He spoke on the ways
this community is making itself
ready for real progress right away.
He particularly praised local
leaders for the steps now being
taken.
Mrs. Clara Pope, past president,
installed new officers. They are:
Mrs. Darlene Clark, President;
Mrs. Mary Lee Matherly, First
Vice-President; Mrs. Sadie Con
stantino, Second Vice-President;
Mrs. Louise Koonce, Chairman of
Public Affairs Dept.; Mrs. Harriet
McFadyen and Mrs. Sue Fant, Co
Chairmen of the Arts Dept. (Not
present, but taking office was Mrs.
Mina Townsend, Historian).
The festive meeting included
reports from the departments,
recognition of Noel Jones, the club
scholarship recipient, flowers for
Mr.s McLean and president Ed
wards, and special music by Mrs.
Lynne Maxwell and Mrs. Anne
Freeze.
