Science and Math Sch. invites local student The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics has in vited 199 high school sophomores from 71 counties to enroll this fall in the class of 1987. Carla Oxendine has been invited from Hoke County. She attends Hoke High School. The N.C. School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) is the na tion's first public, residential high school for academically talented students with an interest in science and mathematics and the potential for high achievement in those areas. The admissions process at the two-year school is competitive, with more than four applicants in 1985 for each student invited to join this fall's junior class. Charles R. Eilber, director of the school, said that he was pleased with the quality of this year's ap plicants. "It was very difficult to choose among these exceptional can didates," Eilber said. "Most of the applicants have had excellent preparation in their home town schools for the challenges we offer at NCSSM." Students applying to NCSSM submit grade reports, scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and California Achievement Test, in dicators of potential and teacher references. They also participate in admissions and placement testing as well as interviews. According to Ola F. Stringer, NCSSM head of admissions, all applicants are rated by a broadly based selection committee, which includes leaders of North Carolina's scientific and educa tional communities as well as members of the school's faculty and staff. Summer intern Rose Marie Parish has recently come to work at the Raeford Burlington Industries Plant in the Weave Mill as a Summer Management Intern. She is a student at L'NC-Chapel Hill and plans to graduate next year. Rose is a native of Hoke County and a graduate of Hoke County High School.
