Carpenter leads Bucks to third in state Terrell Carpenter became the best long-jumper in the state last week after he won the State Cham pionship even though a misting rain made him slip on several at tempts. Carpenter lead the Hoke High Bucks to a third place finish in the state track meet. The Hoke High junior rewrote the books this year by becoming the first male student in the school's history to win a state championship, according to Coach Howard Barkley. Carpenter jumped 24 feet, 5.5 inches for the win. Getting to that length was no small feat. In earlier attempts, the Hoke High junior jumped 23 feet, 3 in ches, but that was not good enough to beat Charlotte's Myers Park High School jumper Alvin Blakney who was in the lead with a leap of 23 feet, 7 inches. The final attempt won the event. In other track news, Carpenter lost the state championship 100 meters by two hundreths of a se cond. Arch rival Tim Worley, from Lumberton, barely edged out the Hoke fast man. Worley clocked 10.60 seconds while Carpenter hit on 10.62 seconds. The overall standings were good for Hoke High also. The team finished third in the State Track Meet, Coach Barkley said. The 800 meter relay team placed third in the meet. Carpenter was joined by Marco Pickett, John Baker and Davey Cunningham.
