Sports F.M.A . honors athletes On May 23 the annual Flora Macdonald Academy Athletic banquet was held in the academy dining hall. Approximately one hundred parents and students attended to honor the academy ' s 1984-85 athletes in boys' and girls' basketball, girls' Softball and cheerleading. Due to a lack of space and campus renovation soccer and tennis could not be played this year but participation in these sports will be resumed this fall. Players who received recognition for their efforts in the sports program were: First row: David McBryde, Most Valuable Player in JV boys' basketball: Amy Parker, Most Improved Player in girls' Softball ; Virginia Hayes, Most Valuable Player in girls' soft ball; Kim McBryde, Co-Female Athlete of the Year. Second row: Kathy Henderson, Most Valuable Cheerleader; LeAnne Hayes, Most Im proved Player in girls' basketball; Sheila Jackson, Most Valuable Player in girls ' basketball and Co-Female Athlete of the Year. Sheila 's " number 40" jersey was retired by the Academy Board of Trustees in honor of her valuable contribution to the athletic program during the past four years. Third row: Eddy Owen, Most Improved Player in JV boys' basketball; Brian Stewart, Most Valuable Player in boys' basketball and Male Athlete of the Year; Robert Jordan, Most Im proved Defensive Player and James Askew, Most Improved Offensive Player in boys' basketball. Not pictured is Kelly Hester, Best A 11 Round Cheerleader and Mrs. Grady Simmons, Cougar Award for her efforts and leadership in renovation of the gym and playground area. During dinner, those attending the banquet were entertained by F.M.A. dancers Nanci Locklear, Lisa Lowery, Courtney and Claudia Mailoy and KeUi Bullock. Pittman Grove wins tourney Pittman Grove Baptist won the tournament last weekend in the first annual Ruritan Club Tourna ment in Grays Creek. The Raiders have a 5-1 record. Leading hitters were Mark Mad den 9-17 with four homeruns; Tony Clark 10-17, and Ron Cook 8-16. In the Raiders regular season church league they beat Stoney Point 38-2 and Massey Hill 16-0 on a one-hitter by Jim Madden. N.C. ?7S-4111 Recreation Bits Swiankt lessons The Recreation Department will be offering beginner, advance beginner and intermediate swimming lessons for all interested county resident* ages 6-up. Betsy Poatel will be the in structor and sessions will be held at 1004 North Fulton Avenue. Two sessions will be offered, each running a period of two weeks. The first session will begin on Monday, June 17 and will end on Friday, June 28. The second session will begin on Monday, July 8 and end on Friday, July 19. CI uses for both sessions will be offered as follows: 11-12 noon-Beginners; 12-1 p.m. ' -Beginners; 1-2 p.m. - Advance Beginners; 2-3 p.m. Intermediate; and 3-4 p.m. - Beginners. Classes will consist of 5 students. The cost for the two week session will be S30. ($36 if you want to use the insurance plan). Registration will take place on a first come, first serve basis beginning Saturday, June 1 at 9 a.m. in the Recreation Office (Old National Guard Armory). Senior citizen fishing trip We will be offering a trip to Topsail Beach on Wednesday, June 19 for some fishing on the pier. There will be a S2 fee to help cover gas expense. Space will be limited to the first 10 PAID individuals who register. Passengers will also be limited to two rods/reels and one tackle box apiece. The Recreation Department is offering a trip to the Wac camaw Pottery Complex in Mrytle Beach, South Carolina. Cost of the trip will be $6 per per son. and is limited to the first 38 PAID REGISTERED INDIVIDUALS. The date is Tuesday, June 25. Plans are being made to stop in Calabash for the evening meal.
