School News Niven graduates from E. Carolina ? Lori Lynn Niven of Greenville, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Niven of Hoke County, was a ? recent graduate of East Carolina University. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications . ' Niven is employed as copy direc tor with Park Communica tions/WNCT AM-FM Radio in : Greenville. : Musso accepted :at Methodist Col. Joseph W. Mosso, son of Jean ! Mosso of Raeford, has been ; selected to the Fall 198S freshman ; class at Methodist College in Fayetteville. Mosso graduated from Hoke County High School. Methodist College is a four -year private residential college of liberal arts and sciences located on a 600-acre campus bordering the Cape Fear River in Fayetteville, N.C. A layer of soil no thicker than the width of a dime, spread across an acre of farmland, weighs about five tons. That's all the amount of soil most American farmlands are able to replace, naturally. Top of their class To be chosen as a marshal , a student must be at or near the top of the class. These seventh graders have proved themselves worthy of being honored because they are the marshals for Upchurch Junior High School's graduation. They are: Michael Lisen by, Annie Jacobs, Kim Potter, Leslie Ashbum and Holly Schurchard. Summer lunch program scheduled The Child Nutrition Program of the Hoke County Board of Educa tion will sponsor a summer feeding program at J.W. Turlington Elementary School, Hoke County High School, Scurlock Elementary School and South Hoke Elemen tary School. The program will be at no cost for all children up to 18 years of age. No child will be discriminated against because of race, color, na tional origin, age, sex or handicap. The program will begin operating on June 24 and close on August 2. The cafeterias will be closed on July 4th. Serving time will be 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m., daily, Monday through Friday. Three Hoke students named for Campbell Univ. honors Three students from Hoke County won academic honors at Campbell University in the spring semester. Among the students who qualified for President's List in Campbell's spring term student body were Patti Jeanine Smith of Rt. 1 Aberdeen and Ruth Ellen Wheeler of Raeford. Cynthia G. Smith of Rt. 1 Aber deen was also recognized with Dean's List honors. McLeod honored by Peace College Raeford resident Laura Benton McLeod was honored at Peace College this spring as one of the first recipients of an Academic Ex cellence Award given to freshmen who demonstrate academic ex cellence in their first semester of college. To be eligible, honorees must make the first semester Dean's List and have not received a major academic scholarship before enrolling. The Dean's List requires a 3.3 or higher grade point average (out of a possible 4.0). Miss McLeod and the other five recipients of the Academic Ex cellence Award received a $300 stipened for next year's expenses The President's List names students who, during their second or a later semester at Campbell, are eligible for the Dean's List and present on the school's 4.00 scale a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 on all college work attempted. The Dean's List recognizes students who in the semester just ended have achieved an average of 3.2S or better in completing 12 or more semester hours. She is a 1984 graduate of Flora McDonald Academy in Red Springs.
