Carpenter looking to future records By Ed Miller ?Zr Johnny and Lee Margie 7- Carpenter have four sons. All four are athletic but one of them, the youngest, recently won the state ?C championship in long jumping. > Terrell Carpenter, a rising senior 'l* at Hoke County High School, put '? ;< his name in the state books in the winners' column at the State \\ Championship Track Meet two X weeks ago. ; '? ; He also put his name right under that of Lumberton senior Tim ?;< Worley. Worley beat Carpenter in ;!? the 100 meter dash by two hun I' dreths of a second. According to Carpenter, he and Worley started running together three years ago. They met while both were members of the East Coast Classic, a track club that competes each summer in the Junior Olympics. "We're good friends," said Carpenter. The first season they ran against each other, Worley consistently won. The next year, the contests got a little closer, according to Hoke Track Coach Howard Barkley. This year, Barkley scheduled his team's meets so Carpenter could run against Worley as much as possible, he said. The pair swapped off wins all season and the state finals race was so close, it took judges about five minutes to decide the winner even with a photo finish. " Worley 's chest was a little big ? ger than Terrell's so he won," said Barkley. The two are still good friends, said Carpenter. In fact, the two share a national title in the 400 meter relay. Running for the East Coast Classic Club, the two, paired with two other young men, ran the race in 39.5 seconds. Carpenter will "be ruwniag and jumping in the Junior Olympics again this year starting June IS, in Raleigh. Carpenter is a soft-spoken young man. For one as fast as he is, his favorite past-times are walking and fishing, he said. Carpenter was not walking when he set an unofficial time in the 100 meters of 10.02 seconds. His best official time is 10.20 seconds. Carpenter has broken a national high school record in the long jump with a leap of 25 feet, 2 and one-half inches. Alvin Blankeney, of Charlotte's Myers Park High School is, and will be. Carpenter's biggest com petition next year. In running events next year, Carpenter will have little if any competition, said Barkley. Pittman Grove wins in shutout victory The Raiders captured another shutout victory over New Hope Baptist of Fayetteville after a fine defensive effort. The score was 11-0. Leading hitters were: Jim Mad den 4-4, with one home run, Ron Cook 2-3, Phillip Manning 2-3. The Raiders play at home next Monday at 6:30 against Lake Lynn Baptist. There is none in the conference, said Barkley. Blankeney almost beat Carpenter this year because of slips on the wet track. On his last at tempt, Carpenter took the title away from him. Next year seems promising for Carpenter. The young man will play foot ball again for the Bucks and then will turn over his athletic ablilities once again to Barkley. According to Carpenter, he owes everthing he knows about track to Barkley. The lucky coach has a lot to work with. Carpenter keeps getting better, said the coach. "He ususally jumps better after he runs the 100 meters," said Barkley.
