jfFormer resident takes ^Seafood Tourney title Sixty eight ladies took to the links at Morehead City Country Club recently for the second an nual Seafood Invitational golf tournament and Morehead City's Margaret English, formerly of Hoke County came away with the . tide. Margaret shot 76-82 with a two day total of 1S8 and was tied with Rhonda Morris of Ahoskie. They * returned to #16 par 5 for a sudden death play off and Margaret won with a par. She was presented a Canadian goose decoy and a $130 gift cer tificate from the pro shop by Percell Jones, the tournament chairman. Margaret was raised in Hoke County, daughter of Mrs. Ruth Willis and sister of Buddy Willis. She is married to Marvin English also of Hoke County and they have lived in Morehead City since 1972 where Marvin is employed with Conner Homes. She has been the club champion at Morehead City Country Club for four years. Recreation Bits Waccamaw Pottery Trip Come on out senior citizens. The Recreation Department is offering a trip to the Wac camaw Pottery Complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Cost of the trip will be $6.00 per person, and is limited to the first 38 PAID REGISTERED INDIVIDUALS. The date is Tues day, June 23. Plans are being made to stop in Calabash for the evening meal. Departure time is set for 8:00 a.m. in the field adjacent to the Old National Guard Armory. Approximate return time to Raeford will be 8:00 p.m. Please call 3-403S for more information. Flea Market The Recreation Department will offer a flea market on Saturday, June 22 beginning at 9:00 a.m. on the field next to Armory Park. There will be a $5.00 charge per space, and the fee must be paid in the Recreation Office in advance. Men's softball action continues The Recreation Department's Men's Softball League continued action on Tuesday night, June II. In the first game of the week, the Jaycees edged Faberge 11-8. R. Wilcox and C. Crowder hit 2-4 apiece, and W. Davis batted 1-4 to lead the hitting for the Jaycees. Faberge's C. Taylor went 3-4, while M. Bratcher and L. Morrison went 2-3 each for the night. In the second game, the Red Springs Merchants downed Beasley's Body Shop 24-11. The Red Springs team was powered by the hitting of M. Smith 4-S, J. Ash ford hit 3-4 with one home run and b. Lisenby batted 3-4. Beasley's leading batters were G. Maynor 3-4, B. Easter ling 3-3 with two home runs and R. Maynor went 2-3 with one home run. In the final game of the night, Hard A Heavy defeated Boahn Concrete 17-3. Hard A Heavy rallied behind the hitting of K. McDonald and R. McRae who went 4-3, and S. Wallace batted 3-4. Boahn was led by G. Mauney who hit 3-4, while teammates L. Chasen and S. Prevatte added 1-3 apiece. In Thursday night's action, the first game paired Hard A Heavy against Beasley's Body Shop with Hard A Heavy coming out with a 15-4 victory. J. Quick hit 3-4, N. Singlet ary 2-4 and R. Leggett hit 2-3 to lead the batting for H&H. Beasley's was powered by the hitting of A. Thomas, L. Morrisey, B. Easterling and R. Maynor who all batted 2-3 for the night. In the second game, the Raeford Jaycees edged out Boahn Concrete 7-5. The win came behind some strong hitting from C. Crowder, who hit 2-3, C. McDuffie batted 3-3, and E. Ramsey went 1-3. Boahn 's leading batters were H. Thompson and W. Johnson who went 2-3 each, and G. Mauney batted 1-4. In the final game of the week, Faberge was defeated by the Red Springs Merchants 16-4. The Merchant's had some powerful team offense with good hitting from K. Martin hitting 3-3, B. Klingerschmidt went 3-3 with one home run, and B. McDonald hit 2-3. - Faberge's leading batters were D. Flora Macdonald honors students Last week Flora Macdonald Academy completed its last six week grading period and released the names of the following students in grades 4 through 12 whose cumulative averages placed them on one of the academy's honor rolls. The Headmaster's Honor Roll requires a minimum average of 95 and students on F.M.A. Honor Roll maintained averages of 90 to 94 for the grading period. The Special Honor Roll is composed of students who raised their average at least 5 points over the preceeding grading period. Area students receiving the honors are: Headmaster's Honor Roll Fourth Grade Heather Britt - Raeford, Court ney Malloy - Lumber Bridge and Kevin O'Briant - Shannon. Sixth Grade Scott Canady - Lumber Bridge, Howie DeVane - Raeford, Jason Lawrence - Red Springs, Claudia Pittman Grove wins another The Pittman Grove Baptist men's softball team won a close decision over a scrappy Lake Lynn Baptist. The final score was 4-0 for the Raider's fifth shutout in seven games. The leading hitters were: Philip Manning 3-3, Tony Clark 2-3, Mark Madden 2-3, and Ron Cook 1-2. The Raiders will play this weekend at the Annual Cedar Falls Classic, hoping to bring the Hoke CJounty team another trophy. Boris Willis Willis will attend School of the Arts Local dancer Boris Willis has been accepted to attend the North Carolina School of the Arts Sum mer Session to study dance begin ning June 23 through July 26. Willis, a recent Hoke High School graduate, has danced with the Fayetteville Dance Theatre and the Dancers Creative Workshops of Fayetteville under the direction of dance instructor and choreographer Josi Von Strasnic sak. While in high school he choreographed, sang and danced in the Hoke High School Chorus and Choral presentations, was a local first place poetry winner in the Raeford Woman's Club Stu dent Arts Festival and was selected by his senior class as "The Most Talented Senior." He played junior and senior high football, was a member of the band, and participated in Hoke County's Summer Youth Theatre in 1983 and 1984. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Willis of Raeford. McNeill decorated Staff Sgt. Jimmy McNeill, son of Mildred L. McNeill of Raeford, has been decorated with the U.S. Army Commendation Medal at Fort Brags. The Army Commendation Medal is awarded to those in dividuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the perfor mance of their duties on behalf of the Army. McNeill is a cannon crewman with the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery. He is a 1971 graduate of Rich mond Hill High School, New York. Raeford students receive FTI degrees Three Raeford area students recently received degrees from Fayetteville Technical Institute. Don Brock of Rt. 3, James F. Bunce, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Bunce and Nancy Pit tman Molchan of Rt. 2, who is the daughter of Elizabeth Pittman and the late George Pittman, all receiv ed degrees during recent gradua tion ceremonies. Markham graduates from UNC- Wilmington The University of North Carolina at Wilmington granted degrees to 517 students at the end of Spring Semester 1985. Among those who completed degree requirements was Raeford resident Kevin Wayne Markham. Markham received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Biology.
