Summer Youth Theatre opens on Friday
The summer has been here for a
while and students are out of
school.
What may prove to be a boring
time for many school age children
and young adults is not so for the
22 students participating in this
year's Summer Youth Theatre
Program, sponsored by the Hoke
County Schools.
This year's drama-musical is be
ing called "The Love Boat" and
features a story line based on the
television show of the same title
with music from classic Broadway
shows.
"The Love Boat's" Director is
Jack Peyrouse, who has been the
Methodist College Director of
Theatre for the last eight years.
Peyrouse stepped in at the last
minute to direct the play when the
original director became ill.
Also working with the Hoke
County students are Jeff Johnson,
Music Director; Linda Glisson,
Choreographer; Melody William
son, Assistant Director; Bill
Sellars, Technician and Andrea
Rodrigues who is the piano accom
panyist and also has a part in the
show.
The show will be held on Friday
and Saturday nights, July 12 and
13 at 8 p.m. at the J.W. Turlington
Auditorium.
No lines dropped
This crowd did not even miss a word as they rehearsed a scene from " The
Love Boat. " Pictured (L to R) are: Sammy Severence, Mary Gwen
Thomas, Mark Williamson and Robert Ross playing the various roles of
characters from the popular television series. See the show to find out who
plays who.

Whether by choice or by direction, Kenny Blake (left), uses some
humorous faces to aid his character. Mark Williams (center), and Bill
Sellars also go through the motions of a dance that will enhance the song,
" There's No Business Like Show Business. "
The whole crew
Director Peyrouse gives his cast some tips to a good performance. These really began to take shape Tuesday when the show was played for the
young people have been working on the show for about a month. Things Hoke County Migrant Summer School students.

You could almost call Miss
North Carolina, Joni Parker, a
native of Hoke County. She lives
just across the line in Cumberland
County and that is because of the
bend of the stream.
Joni is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. D.B. Parker and D.B. was a
Hoke County native and finished
high school in Raeford in 1951. He
was a classmate of Sheriff Dave
Barrington, Frank Teal, and Mrs.
Connie Fulk Ellis, who works at
The News-Journal.
D.B. left Raeford and served 20
years in the Air Force and retired
as a Lt. Colonel. He has been in
business in Hoke County since his
retirement. He operates a mobile
home park and also sells mobile
homes and recreational vehicles.
Maybe he has sold some of these
businesses, but he did operate
them at one time. He and his wife
also have been connected with the
Miss Teen-age Beauty pageant
over the past few years.
He was by the office Monday
and told me that he hadn't realized
how a beauty pageant winner
could have all her time taken up by
the organization putting on the
event. Her schedule is made up for
her and it is almost impossible to
get in touch with her.
We here at the paper hope that
we can get an interview with Joni
in the next few days. Everyone in
Hoke County is proud of her and
offers to her our congratulations.
Also these go to her parents and
other relatives in the county. So we
hope you will wait us out for a
write up, the same way we are
waiting.

Every year different organiza
tions in Raeford and Hoke County
give out awards and scholarships
to the students at the various
schools in the county. Maybe you
think sometimes that the students
just take them for granted and
don't appreciate them. Now
maybe some of them do, but
others go so far as to let you know
that they do appreciate the award.
The Ellis Williamson Post 20 of
the N.C. American Legion gives
prizes in money in the top students
at Hoke High and Upchurch for
Citizenship. Printed below is a let
ter from a student who won one of
these awards. I believe you will ap
preciate his response to his award.
Dear Legionnaires:
I would like to thank all of you
for the fifty dollar scholarship I
was presented with at my senior
dinner. I will use this money to
help further my education at the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. The knowledge the
American Lef.ion has helped me to
obtain will always mean a great
deal to me.
Sincerely,
Randy Scull
Randy is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. David Scull who live at 1109
Fulton St., Raeford. Who said the
younger generation was going to
pot? This letter should build our
confidence in our younger people.
